L series g/box advice

Post by rob.121 »

Hi all, i have a 620 ute which has had a L18 and 4speed 180b drivetrain conversion. I am wanting to put a 5peed into the truck, what would be my best option, prefeer straight bolt up. so far im thinking; dogleg 180b, 910 bluebird or 720 ute g/box also noted there are long nose and short g/boxes. have no idea what option would suit me best? and what the pros and cons of each are if any.

also would an upgrade to L20b be worthwhile? or are the two motors similar power wise and not worth the hassle?

any advice appreciated

cheers 8-)

do you want floorchange or column shift?
i have an r30 skyline turbo 5spd shortbox that may suit your conversion, its the second strongest L-series 5spd available, 280zx turbo longbox 5spds are the strongest im told, and theyre really hard to get these days.
im local too, send me a pm.

sounds good, i want floor change, its already has a 4speed floor change installed(from a 180B). I would prefer a 5spd box that will bolt in in place of the 4speed with little or no mods needed if thats possible.

the 180b 4spd is a long box, so if you wanted a bolt in 5spd requiring no mods, you would need either a 180b sss dogleg 5spd, or a 910 bluebird 5spd.

Or a box from a Z/ZX? A mate of mine used a 280ZX box in a 720 ute once.

Hey thanks guys just what i needed to know think i will try find a 910 5spd. Im guessing a 720 box would fit also? im not too keen on the low gearing of the ute box tho.

also what are your thoughts on l18 v l20? is there a decent power increase between the two? am thinking of potentially upgrading along with carb cam and exhaust but unsure if its entirely worthwhile as i already have a reasonable l18 motor(standard).

which head does your L18 have on it? The W53 headed L18 had a poo's LoPo cam. The A87 ones had a better cam. all the L20b's (U67 head) had the better cam out of the box. There's no replacement for displacement though.
