just been out for another look and when engine isn't running there is only ignition power to coil but when key is off and engine is running it has power to both sides of coil although negative side is fast pulsing, the charge light is also on on the dash when engine is running.

have you changed your alternator? I had this problem once when I ran an L series alternator on an A series car.

Im tending to work on the theory that the carb is the only thing that has changed.
So there for is the cause.

have a read of this

I don't think it is dieseling as it runs normally after key is turned off and only stops when it is stalled or I pull the coil lead off.

the engine has been replaced with one out of a '91 vanette, so it is possible that I have f&^%ed up and put something where it shouldn't be or omitted to put something where it should be although there doesn't seem to be any extra wires anywhere

If it stops running when you disconnect the coil wire, then it definitely WON'T be fuel related.

I'd suspect the coil is wired up to one of the voltage sense wires for the alternator/regulator. So it's receiving voltage whenever the alternator is running.

I was thinking similar but know the coil wires are connected the same as before. Is it possible that it is back feeding from the alternator somehow??

Put your old alternator back on. Chances are the alternator from the donor van may use the same charging system as a L series car does. They have a diode somewhere in their set up. What letters are on the terminals on the back of the ALT?
