cheers all, we used to use silver solder silfloss etc back in the day when I was welding radiators and fuel tanks, I got the good stuff with the silver and nickel compound , rather expensive but not as expensive as a meltdown, im encouraged to hear Dave that yours was done the same way. Im looking at getting everything enamel coated to help with the heat issues, seems like another cheap insurance.
things arnt quite going as fast as they could be but I have managed about 6 pages of updates in the same no. of weeks so cant complain.

Hey Joel, yes actually I did, I managed to get the fuel rail tube sweated/welded onto the injector housings, then I spent half an hour with it in the sandblast cabinet, which has cleaned it up quite nicely. and that's all I got done because at the moment , I would need to get our rubber dingy out to paddle across the lake to get into the garage, although its kind of funny seeing goldfish from the goldfish pond swimming along the driveway. luke got his car out just in time lol.
when or if things dry out, ill take a couple of pictures.

for the record, its only the drive that's flooded, the garage is a good foot or so higher and dry as a bone

hey all, got a couple of hours under my belt today, as you can see in the pics I finally bought myself an ownership argon bottle for the tig and ive made a start on the plenum, ive been on uncle google quite a bit, but still struggling with the concept of this stage of the build.

basically the information I have gleaned is that optimum plenum size is 60-80% of engine capacity which puts me at around 1120cc of volume, once the turbo spools and boost is achieved, there wont be much relevance in this as the whole plenum will be pressurised.

the bit Im trying to get my head around is how the plenum will work best off boost, or pre-boost, I have been reading a thread sent to me about air speeds in plenums /volumes and area and shape, a tapered plenum with trumpets to take advantage of maximum air speed seems to be the way most high performance N/A engines make their power, but they also need plenty of plenum volume so that they use the air in the plenum rather than trying to suck air through the entire inlet system, which will decrease the airspeed,

Im torn between around 80% engine volume so the turbo fills the plenum quickly, and less lag, and having enough air in the plenum to keep the airspeed up before the boost comes on and fills the plenum.

anyway here is where im at, once im happy with the shape ill cut the bottom tacks and weld the base to the inlet runners, then ill flare the tops of the runners to make trumpets, after that ill weld the top of the plenum back on and attach the throttle body.

In the first couple of pics you can see the plenum was too big, it would have given me a volume around 3litres, so I chopped it down a bit and now ill be somewhere around 1.3- 1.4 depending on where I decide to cut it to length.

this is all very new and I can only hope im on the right track, so any comments good or bad would be appreciated.

By the way, do people calculate the inlet track, ie the pipes and intercooler as part of the volume? whats the rule of thumb there?
