Head gasket blew on the way through to Hamilton yesterday. Luckily I decided we should pull over to check the water in Rotorua. Checked the water and oil and that confirmed it: bugger. Managed to limp to Mitch's house to await pickup.
Bit of bad luck but I hope we stopped before we did any real damage. Hopefully should be back on the road again soon :roll:

When you pull the head off to fix it, for the love of god keep the timing chain tight! Not trying to sound condescending, but I know at least three people who didn't and it hade a head gasket change, into a full blown mission!

Point noted about the timing chain. My Dad will be doing the work since I'm away so will let him know.

Not sure why the head gasket blew yet. Hopefully the head is all good.

It didn't use any water when we had it the first couple of days so just bad luck I guess? Not sure why it happened yet though.

Givin it a bit of shit when its not warmed up usually does it, did it on my old wagon and someone else said it was the same with their 1600 a while ago

Mate, I valve bounce my L18 cold when i leave work with no oil pressure and she still goin hard!

headgaskets can break down over time, ive found that on a few A-series motors of my own, i just managed to catch them before it got worse.
the headgasket may even be weeping on the L18 in the blue 180b.....
