its not needed at all for cert. Anything that requires a high quality weld they ask to be cracktested. Eg suspension bits. If you can weld competently you'll get anything through cert
I found if you ask the cert guy you get three answers. Over the phone is you must be ticketed. In person is it depends what it is. In person after he's found out you can weld and have some engineering sense, then go nuts.
