There are two different input shaft lengths on L series boxs well atleast between 4 speed and five speed. I learnt this when trying to do a 5 speed to 4 speed swap on a mates c grade R30 skyline stock car.
With out chopping about 10-15mm off the end of the input shaft that 4 speed wasn't going in there.
Ended up putting my good spare 5 speed in there instead. And i ended up with the crappy 5 speed,
