your best bet is either Weber or Dellorto. but if you want something different you could try Solex (which are similar to dellorto/weber) or flat sliders from a motor bike, but when I say something different, read (costly and difficult)
next step up would be injection, but you definitely wont get that under a grand.

When you need some, let me know, I have been able to get them direct from Italy in the past at a far cheaper cost than you'll find on TradeMe, and generally they come ready to bolt on and run.
