I am about to buy it and don't know if I should fix it and re-vin it or hang on to it. I just thought owning probably the oldest in New Zealand was a good thing but not sure now?

I suppose it depends on what you want from the car.
If you want a fast racey burnout machine then it's not for you. If you'd like a nice old cruiser to bring to meets, and drive on Sundays then it could serve you well.
it'll be worth more once it's road legal. And then the number 2 build number would probably carry more weight too. BUt I wouldn't expect it to be worth 5 figures any time in the short term future. But then again, maybe I'm wrong?

I think an early serial number is not worth a lot extra for this model, and even for a 240Z I don't think it makes a huge difference unless there is some real historical connection. (I used to own 240Z No. 16 in the RHD series).
These early '60's Bluebirds are quite cool though, and of course cheap compared to some of the later Datsuns like the 1200 and 1600.
It's a bit of a nuisance the classic Datsuns like the 1600 becoming so expensive. I had more fun when they were cheap and one didn't have to worry about parking somewhere and it getting stolen or damaged or someone taking the badges. And it was satisfying having such a cheap car that performed so well with a few of the tried and true basic mods. The good old days.......ie the 80's and 90's.

Are you sure Bluebirds were assembled in NZ?
I would have thought that as a new marque here they would have been imported....
Can you elaborate on this, Im fascinated.
I know Mackenzie Motors in Timaru had one of the the first batch and it remained in the showroom (not for sale) until the 70's.
We called it the Redbird for obvious reasons....

Yes very sure I have researched this and the first of the Bluebirds of this model was in 1962 and they were imported. 1963 was the first year that we actually first assembled the Bluebirds in New Zealand.

I am not sure who made them but I think it may have been in Dunedin but not really sure.
