Finally managed to track down some new leads, they are Champion ones and are a little bit funny, you have to reuse the top seals from the original leads but there isn't really a nice place for them to sit. Got to be better than the leads from 1992 though. New lead in the background.



Finally got round to buying a proper socket for getting the filler bung out of Nissan boxes. It's a 17mm 8 point socket.



The bung was very tight, I ended up bracing the power bar against the floor then lowering the car to get it undone. Now I'm no gearbox expert but I'm pretty sure these weren't supposed to come out with the oil. They are parts of a bearing cage and I suspect it's probably the countershaft centre bearing. The box has been noisy since I got it, it's probably been rooted for a while. The oil was quite thin and very, very grey/black.

Im not much of a gearbox expert either, but would agree with your diagnosiss, that the metal bits shouldnt come out with the oil, they should stay in there so that you dont know about them and therefore, not worry that thier brothers and sisters may still be living within the confines of the aluminium house, with which they have departed.

that is quite exceptional that all that came out and somehow it still selects gears.

Wouldn't the countershaft use tapered needle rollers on the countershaft?
That looks like the remnants of a ball bearing cage?

I found this picture, it's exactly what mine will look like I think, all the ball bearings will be sitting at the bottom.

Sweet now you have a bearing number you can reliably order your new bearing to put straight back in ready to go with out waiting.

Yeah, except to change the bearing you have to pull pretty much the entire gearbox apart to get it out I've helped do one before and it wasn't a fun job, not really sure if I'm skilled enough to take it apart and put it back together without cocking something up.

The gearbox will be sweet for a while, I've been thinking about changing it to a C series box anyway. I've got an RB20 box that actually has exactly the same problem!

It isn't that hard.
At least the rest of your box isn't fucked too. Bearings are pretty easy to change. It's when you get things like bad crunching, and popping out of gear that it gets hard to fix.
The secret is to have a nice workspace, and plenty of room. So you can lay things out in the order they came apart in. When all the bits go into one bucket, get all mixed up, and dont go back together for 12 months that reassembly gets difficult.

Scored the Recaro seat this car came into the country with tonight, now I can get rid of the horrible seat covers. Genuine Bride seat rail for an R30.





Got this dual pass Fluidyne radiator for free too, it's got a leak from somewhere along the seam on the other side. Not sure if I'm going to use it or not, I've still got an aftermarket R32 one from the old R30 but both of them have the outlet on the wrong side for the FJ.



Took these mirrors too, they are an aftermarket kit for an R30 by the looks of it, mainly got them for the rubbery cover bits that go on the inside, the factory ones always disintegrate.
