hey lads question for ya's. the gearbox is getting pretty crunchy, can hardley change down into 2nd when it cold, so guessing synchro's are stuffed, id normally just leave it but it's getting annoying, i have another 5speed in wagon but its not much better, what sorta cost would be invovled in getting it shifting smooth again? hopefully itl last till akaroa but after that ill get it sorted

New synchro rings aren't cheap, although they are still available AFAIK. depending on where you get them, it would cost around $200 to replace the bearings while your at it. (You'll pretty much have to fuck most of them to get the gearbox apart)

yea old man was saying they arnt cheap 2, he reckons just getta 4 speed for it, but i quite like having the 5speed as i do alot of traveling out to rangiora and it good to have 5th for 100km cruising, only does 2800 at 100 in 5th

i would just put up with it until akaroa man, if it shits itself, put the other 5 speed into her, and if that doesnt last, then go for a 4 speed. push comes to shove i can get prices on the bearings but i would need dimensions of them or atleast their numbers.
i could possibly also get synchros but not too sure on that

Maybe slap a four speed in it, and see if there are enough good parts from the two boxes to make one good one. 1st and 2nd gear synchro rings tend to do the most work. Sometimes you can swap over the rings from 1st and 2nd with 4th and 5th, and get away with it. I once did a gearbox where It was found that the taper upon which the ring runs was worn, and we only just got away with using the ring from another gear.

yea ill think bout it bout it mate, i mean i got 2 5speeds like i said earlier but i wouldnt want to completly fuck it, i been taking it easy but once it warms up and ya been driving for a while its allgood shifting 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, but when it cold man ya can hardley get it in 2nd shifting up and shifting down to 2nd from 3rd well jesus it twangs and grinds , i was thinking with the cost of getting 1 rebuilt would it be more beneficial to get a toyota T50?

then wouldnt you need to get an adapter plate, different clutch plate and modified driveshaft?
