Also as another point of view. If you have the wheels you want you build your car around them to ensure you dont run into problems after you have certed your car and you have to put spacers and modify arms/struts. camber tops.
Ive done that with my wagon and also John has done so with his cedric(even tho he changing his wheels and suspension again)
They can cost heaps or very little. I seen some Mk2s that im mad for and they were only a couple hundy.

Howzit.

Like Dirtyleppa said, as far as wheel width concerns, it is measured between lips. The inner side of the lips. That is the area on which the tyre will be mounted, the area the tyre can expand. The extra 0ne inch width ( 1/2 in on ea side ) is what the lips thickness is all about. ( 1/2 inch each side )

A nine inch wheel would measure 10 inches across.

Cheers.

More progress!

Today i finished greasing and assembling my rear axels, borrowed some factory Laurel mags off Bart which cleared the spring by having the brake rotors on to space them out a bit. Also got the crane in position to take the motor out when i get my stand back, which should be this week. Im going to have to jack the car up again so i can fit the legs from the crane under the car to get it a bit closer. Radiator as been modified had to go remote resovoir so the bonnet would sit nice and tabs have been welded on to make mounting easier. Might also need to go for longer springs in the front too so they stay captive.

Heres some pics:
