Stink buzz bro. I had something similar happen in an old 626 I had, tried to brake and BANG! Car didn't slow down but the brake pedal started violently kicking back! When I pulled it apart I found that the friction material had actually fallen right off the brake shoe on one side. My guess would be that yours has done something similar.
I wouldn't sweat not having the parts car, you will want to put all new shoes and cylinders in it anyway then it should be fine.

Yep will prob be the friction material coming off, so annoying - had the same thing happen with 2 year old brake shoes - the ones in yours are probably original - should have no trouble finding them if its the brakes

Im hoping that you did both sides lol
Also did you do the wheel cylinders - if not try and get some asap and do those too - 9 times outa 10 they will start to leak after you have reset them back in with the thicker shoes (if they leak then you have to replace them and the shoes again which is a pain.
Awesome that it wasnt a major thou.

+9000, Definitely replace them now even if you have to pull everything apart again, I cannot stress enough how important this is.
