How do sills get damaged by guard rolling? You dont even roll the bottom edges of the guard!
Re: Wof my thoughts exactly!

Its in the WOF guide that exhaust and body kits are not structural and not counted when measuring the lowest point of the car

My exhaust is 60mm at the dump pipe and I have been through 3 different of garages and no issues at all

How are the sills damaged, decent structural distortion?

Dents in sills, like someones jacked the car up on them.

Get it all the time at work with people changing tyres on the side of the road with new cars - whoops there goes a sill.

Had a good convo on the phone last night Nathan

Feel bad for this guy - all he wants to do is drive the dam thing, had a pretty bad run on this car. Engine, New Engine and the one after that….. o wait that one is the good one now lol, then Brakes, wipers and now panelwork.

I can fully understand how you feel (and sounded) Nathan - the amount of times ive had to pull the 120Y off the road and fix this and that only to have something else destroy itself - im probably speaking for most Datsun owners on this one.
:deadhorse: :deadhorse:

Or who hasn't brought a car with previous "cheese and biscuits" (BOG) hiding away underneath that "fresh paint - I have.

As for the guard “damage” who hasn’t bashed the guards out on any old car to “fix” the issue of tyres rubbing – I HAVE – My orange 1200 has had a hammer, cricket bat and large steel pipe in there cos those stupid 13x6’s with 185/6013’s didn’t fit (10 years ago), also a little yellow sunny that rolled out our drive with widened steels had similar treatment from memory with me sitting in the back seat for max rolling weight (haha get it). Didn't think of the fact I could have put narrower tyres on.

Gotta get it done somehow or you cant drive it asap – fun while doing it  – not so fun now as I have DX style flared rear guards to contend with on the 1200

Whats done is done, you can’t change it, you can only look forward and do what ya gotaa do.

Sounds like hopefully it will be going to a good repairer to get stuff sorted - (maybe even panel AND paint??? :D )

Good on you dude for sticking to it though – its probably tough looking at it now but once its fixed you’ll happy as again.

This is the information taken from the WoF guide (VIRM).

This is the 'modification threshold'.

Fitting of or modification to: Springs and shock absorbers
LVV certification is not required provided that:

* the springs or shock absorbers are direct replacements, and
* replacement springs are contained within unmodified OE seats throughout full suspension travel, and
* replacement springs are self-retaining in their seats at full extension, without the use of non-standard devices such as wire-ties, straps, or external spring locators, and
* replacement springs have not been heated or cut, and
* springs and spring seats are not height adjustable (unless OE), and
* replacement shock absorbers, including air-adjustable units, fit unmodified OE mountings, and
* suspension maintains sufficient travel for safe operation when fully laden, and
* suspension components maintain sufficient clearance from unmodified bumpstops when fully laden, and
* a minimum of 100 mm ground clearance (unladen and without driver) exists below any part of the vehicle structure, or any steering, braking or suspension component (NOTE 2), and
* the normal relationship between front and rear suspension height is not unduly affected.

NOTE 2: Does not include such items as exhaust pipes and exterior body panels that do not contribute to the structural strength of the vehicle.
I can assure you I never jacked/sat on axle stands on the sills in the time I owned the vehicle, always on the reinforced chassis points. I distinctly recall the sills being in fine shape - compared with the other 260c's that had come and gone from the flat these were the straightest and most rust free I'd seen.

Quick to judge, but the car was complete and fully functional when it left my possession. Everything was in working order, re complied within 6 months of change of ownership, several inspectors as well as roadside cops inspected and never had a issue with the car, I might add wof'd by Nathan after he'd purchased from me.

In saying that it is a car thats 35 years old, yes I'd taken measures to to make things fit. Exhaust was the same one that the car was re complied with too.

I had just as much to do on the car in the time I had it, I cracked on and with the help of a few good friends alot was achieved in a short amount of time.

Its all part of owning a old car, the things you do now will be some of the things you'll remember best, a certain sense of achievement and pride in what you've done, anyone can just go out and buy something. To fix and personalise something is a whole other story.

Hey dude just to clear any mis understandings etc on my part i think most people that know me think im dark about you selling the car (which i probably was originally) but bloody hell i'm over all that shit, its just a car after all - ive had heaps of various opportunities weather to make money or not that have probably pissed others off - hell come to think of it at least half the cars ive made decent $$ on here in CHCH came from you and they were brought and sold, built together - heap of fun - specially the guard rolling with steve around to lend a hand with the sunny - heaps of great memories.

Sill Point - I was not implying that anyone here had actually jacked it off the sill - the reason i said that is Ivan (RBLVR?) came in to work the other day and had just been for a warrant. The guy casually started to jack the car up solely on the sills before ivan yelled at the dude to stop, he had to get the guy to put it on the chassis after the mechanic said - "what are you worried about its an old car". I dont know where he went etc but it shows that when you hand your car over somewhere there are people out there that dont give a toss.

Just another example.... I took my 260c to Chris's work work a puncture - in a hurry so didnt fix myself - but i went there cos i can trust those guys - alot of oldschool shiz goes through there and the guys. i think, enjoy working on all the old beasts.

Judging - im not judging as i said in my previous post - you gotta do what you gotta do - the car didnt get finished for the akaroa cruise 1 month out by sitting there looking at it   - those who don't know Chris spent a constant 2-3 weeks in the shed (keeping most of us awake till the early hours i might add ;) ;) ) grinding banging welding etc etc.

And i didnt just ring nathan to tell him all the finer details of what may or may not have been done - i just wanted to find out EXACTLY what was said in the wof and see if there was someone that can help him out - the phone number i gave him was for Mush who has a magic wand / ability to fix pretty much anything metal. (IE my sunny got a quater of its roof cut out to fix 2 spots of rust - i nearly died when i came out to see how much was missing). Just trying to genuinely help someone out as most of us do in this Club.

Also just as a side note - Chris doesnt even own a Datsun or Nissan anymore and he is still browsing and commenting and even helping out where he can on most peoples rides and builds - i know alot that do own or have sold and don't even post anymore - i think that says alot about the guy at the end of the day.

so again sorry for hyjacking your thread (seems to happen quite a bit these days with people taking a different story from the same words as it always will with this being a written forum) but i felt this needed to be said.

Wow this has escalated quickly! ha

I can assure everyone i was happy with the car the day i brought it and i still love it to this day :highfive: !(My girl friend say sometimes more than her)

I know all to well, the "joys" of of owning older cars. heck i only just brought my first post 1980 car the other day and i have had my fair share of cars. So as much punishment as it keep giving me its all part of the said "joy" ha

Re: Guards, Sills

It has been WOF'd twice while in my possession with these panels in there current state, I'm no WOF inspector but i personally don't see the "damage" as being excessive enough to fail a warrant on, but again i'm not a WOF inspector.

Re: Exhaust

I think its been made pretty clear the WOF man made an error measuring the exhaust as the lowest point, if i ever go back to same place i will mention this.

MOVING ON

As Brock said, i may just go a head and start saving for a panel and paint! This means i get everything done in one go rather than picking out bits and pieces to get fixed here and there. however, in the mean time im not sure i can not drive this thing for another extended amount of time or miss another cruise.

That being said in the most non dodgy way possible  .....What time frame (if there is one) does what the car failed on stay in the system.

Id like to take my car back to my usual WOF guy (only went to this new place as they are open on sat) and see how it goes

in the mean time guys

Wow, I just caught up on this thread. You are having a shitty time, but you sound positive now so good luck!

As for paint and panel, sometimes just getting the rust, dents fixed, primered up and enjoying the car for a couple months while you save for the rest of the paint work etc is the right option. Otherwise you end up like half us owners with a car sitting in the garage for a few years lol

Good luck!
