I think I have a spare T3 turbo in the garage if that one doesn't work for you.
(Also have that cowel drain grate at home for ya too).

Cheers ginge, I'm just waiting to hear back from my mate who lives around the corner from you to see if he can go pick it up! I have a T3 off my other VG20 as well, but I've already paid to have this one rebuilt once so I don't really want to fit a different one at this stage. If it is really whiney I'll just rebuild my other turbo using one of those kits off trademe.

Well done John, good amount of progress you've got going on there. Must be itching to take it for a squirt with it running properly and manual!

Nothing like taking the girl around the corner and feeding it to her.

Still waiting for my extension housing seal. Been focusing on getting my derby car ready for next weekend, so haven't really done much on this. But since it was a nice weekend I tackled the job of cleaning the engine bay. I used to be a car groomer, so I knew how much I was going to hate this. First, the "before" pic:

And after many hours of labour:

I forgot how much my hands used to get banged up doing this. I had to remove a few things to facilitate cleaning, namely the charcoal canister(s), the alarm siren that never worked anyway, and the weird vacuum control module. I've heard that Z31's run fine without the VCM or charcoal canister, so I don't plan on refitting any of this stuff. Yep, no cat, no charcoal can, no EGR, she's full pollution spec now! Excellent.

Another job I was avoiding because it wasn't looking easy was the wiring for the manual box. Actually it looks like it might not be as I expected. There is a separate sub-harness that has the plugs for the auto trans, knock sensor, alternator, oil pressure switch, an earth wire and a plug that I have absolutely no idea what it does, but it plugs in below the wiper motor. Then it goes into a big multi-pin plug that goes into the fusebox
I laid the manual one side by side with the auto one, and it looks like I will be able to just plug the whole deal in where the auto loom was - all the relevant plugs are the same. Here they are - the auto one is on top.

I'm a bit concerned that maybe it won't start or won't have reverse lights when I'm done without the inhibitor switch, but the manual box has both neutral and reverse switches so I should hopefully be ok. I'm sure glad I labelled everything though!

Unfortunately the loom suffered some damage during removal, due to me dropping the whole subframe out of the parts car with the transmission loom still attached.... Brock fortunately had a bunch of crimp terminals lying around and very kindly crimped a new terminal onto the earth wire.

And here's where I'm at now. Only one wire has been pulled out, and I really have no clue what this does, but I'm pretty sure it's important. I figured out how to get out the orange U-shaped clip that retains the terminals, but I can't seem to get the terminal itself out to re-crimp the wire on. Anyone got an ideas here?

Finally, since Brock was so helpful I promised I would not post this pic of him posing as COUNT CRACKULA on facebook. But I didn't say it wouldn't make it to the internet....
No pants can contain Brocky's mighty buttcrack! You can cover it up, but the crack will seep through!
