Yup, just fitted one in mine recently and running a sr20det .
Had R160 from a leone In It when i got it and that took a fair hammering at the track before poped so thinking the r180 should do alright.

long R180s can bolt in, just have to sort half shafts, and drive shafts

Oh. So there's no bolt in upgrade with out messing with driveshaft and half shafts ? Is the half shaft mods the same for r180 and r200? If there's a similar amount of wrk involved I may aswell go r200

An old Clutch R180 out of a 240z or the like will be a straight in, these were not factory std. and rare as,

has any 1 put an r230 in before from a z32? ive just been offered 1 but ive heard its a prick to fit into a 510?

Those are a shortnose diff. So there would be considerable modification to your rear subframe.

The R180 my mate has is the Nissan one, bolts straight in and uses the standard half shafts.

I have a Nissan Silvia r180 subframe if that's any use to you but the diff has been sold
