Whoa, long time no update.

Long storey short I passed cert recheck today, yay!

Unfortunately I had to make quite a few changes from how the car was in those pics. Basically it was too low (chasis rails 40-50mm from the ground), and not enough travel in the back. Also had issues with finding a legal tyre/wheel combo. So lifted it up about 20mm and chucked some 14" street fins on it. Not as bad ass as I was hoping but at the end of the day Im just stoked to have it back on the road. Cruises real nice (had a 150km round trip to cert place), 3000rpm at 100odd km which is nice (thank god for the 5 speed!)

Few lessons learnt about the cert process, and also not to listen to the bullshit that anyone says who ave never been through getting a car certed.

be glad to know incase im building my car to someones idea of what cert is? pm me if it shouldnt be publicly said

What I meant was a lot of people seem to have their own ideas about what should and shouldn't pass cert (despite the fact they have not been through the process themselves......) so I very quickly learnt that the only way to find out is talk to the cert person you are going to use. Due to the way the system works and the way the rules are written, different certifiers interpret the rules slightly differently and what they consider safe.

In my case, I had to meet the following checks, which is why I had to lift the car up:

Front tyres not to touch guards under full lock and full shock compression (ie no springs, just bumpstops)
Car not to be touching bumpstops when fully laden (ie 4 people)
Bumpstops to be functional (ie not a tiny piece of solid rubber)
~50mm ground clearance when fully laden (ie 4 people)

So it very quickly became clear that in my case, there was no way in hell I was going to meet those requirements with the car 40mm off the ground to start with lol.

Now I can guarantee that others have had cars certed at very low heights and that is fine, but in my case it wasnt going to happen. And Im OK with that, as at the end of the day they are putting their buisness on the line and are just playing by the rules.

Its all too easy for people to be like fucking slam it bro itl be sweet but for me its just not worth it. Considerin most of said people dont have a certed low car, let alone a car on the road at all.

Long storey short, get talking to your cert man asap and dont be all FTP when something doesnt go right.

thanks man, my coupe wont be as low as yours was! thats for sure as the chch roads dont really allow for it
glad you shared this as anyone else going for cert can start with the right steps in the proper direction. think i will get the hoff (chch certifier) to visit for a halfway check and see what he wants, but given i dont have a v8 and its japanese it may well be a silly exercise given i will be dropping it in to temuka or swannanoa at this stage. but be good to get a general idea.

Interesting about the 50mm ground clearance at full laden weight, i doubt a full size fellow could fit in my back seat let alone 2!!! with luck would a cert guy allow 4x fit females? i imagine if he had to "test" the suspension itd pass with flying colours!

Went for first proper drive today since cert and whatnot. Clicked up nearly 300km heading over to the Wairarapa and down to the south coast. So good having to back on the road!

So much love for this car!

The wheels I have on at the moemnt arent actually mine so have been keeping an eye of sorts out for some. Picked these up yesterday (Great to meet you Dylan!). Nothing outrageous, but a bit wider and can still use the same tyres.

Trying to find someone in Wellinton who will polish them......




Two are gold as above, two are silver, so will need to do some painting. I quite like the gold, to me they are quintesential for techno phantoms. But ill see what they are like on the car once polished up.

pow pow time for some pretty photos before I see it drive off into the sunset for the last time.....Ive sold it to a fellow datsun piner so Im sure it will be looked after
