Got the ECU flashed properly tonight,
got TunerStudio software working & communicating properly
Megatune software I found out isnt compatiable with the more recent firmware

battery on charge, so hope to kick it in the guts again tomorrow night or wednesday

Battery charged, communications all good.
Bolted up temporary exhaust, and rolled it outside.
Nett result below:

:burnout:

So all progressing nicely.

Next problem to overcome, is I think I have a dodgey ignition signal to the ECU or relays or something.
As engine only runs when you hold starter motor on, as soon as you release the key from start to ignition position
(even if revving nicely up in mid range) the engine just dies immediately....
Will have to do some wiring checks & diagnose (I am sure its no biggy)
For the run up test, I actually was still holding the starter motor engaged while I revved it

Loving it, great to see things progressing.
Kitch I know nothing about Mega sqirts or any of that modern stuff, and I don't think you would have over looked this, but would hate you to search if it is this easy. The original ignition runs two power sources from the key, one to the coil activated on cranking, one to the ballast resistor to run the engine at a lower voltage, could it be that your ignition wire is the coil direct one, only activated on cranking, then cutting when the key is released? Sorry if I am way off, I really have no understanding of your system, but if it was that easy it would be nice :D

Vaughan thanks for the advice.
Yeah it must be something like that, the weird thing is that the ECU still remains powered up etc, so its like its getting a momentary loss of voltage or something?
I can't recall where I grabbed my ignition signal from, but I am going to run it directly off a 12v switch to test, and hope that that eliminates the problem, then I will use a test light or multimeter to get a more reliable ignition signal.

and PS I know nothing about ECU's and programming etc, and very little about electrical systems; just teaching myself "on the fly"

Yeah Wal, that 'giggle' is all good, thats what happens when your film crew is a 5 year old & 8 year old.....

To add to what Vaughan said my 160j wont keep running if I have the dash unpluged took me a bit to work that one out .
And that sounds so sweet must feel so good after all your hard work

As above. This only matters with cars with factory tachos tho.as the ignition feed runs through them

hmmm... my factory tacho is disconnected at present.....
As i have to modify a new output from the ECU to run it...

Do I need to bypass the tacho somehow with the loop from the coil or something?
I might just hook up the tacho to original wiring and trial that, although it wasnt running last time I run engine up on carbs....
