the motor is pretty much run in (done like 600 miles on carbs 18 months ago) then has had #4 honed, and another piston put in, but reused the ring set.
will give the oil a bit of a "scratch & sniff" and assess that too.....

Sounds like your having all the same problems i had when i first tried to start mine. I had a bead blaster and a old set of plugs which i kept just blasting to get them clean again when they fouled and they will foul as the default map in the megasquirt is super rich. I would say hold off starting it all the time until you are ready to tune as your going to just keep on owning plugs. What you really need to do is to get it started and tune the idle. Idle is really easy to set in the sense that you just keep on backing the fuel off till it dies and then bump it up a couple of values and it should idle fine. This will make a huge difference. Sounds like if it is taking a bit to take then your after start enrichment is a bit lean. I have started having this issue a bit too but havent tuned it out of mine yet. ITB's in general can just be a bit cunty to get them to start right especially if you dont have the idle control hooked up like me. But dont tune anything else but idle until you have it sweet or you will just go backwards with tuning the other maps. Hope that helps.
Also yes yes yes to checking your oil to make sure it is not fuel soaked. Havent done it on a L but on a shitty old american engine we had mega spark problems and took the dizzy out while forgetting to turn the key off and man i will never do that again. Singed the eyebrows awesomely and found the oil dipstick at the other end of the driveway.

Brocky, that is a mint vid, think I may have seen it before
Sounds awesome - if anyone asked me why ITB - then that vid is the answer
The Y has gone to a chick in Oamaru, have told her bout the club, so maybe not he last we see of it.
