Whipped cam covers yesterday afternoon with James, inspected all the hydraulic lifters and all seem to be fine. So cranked the motor over with the spark plugs out and plenty of oil is getting to the camshafts etc could still hear that clacking noise but not as much as when the motor was running on first start up. Did a compression test and came out with 150psi across all 4 cylinders, checked timing and all the timing marks seem to line up, James and I are pretty stumped could be a valve hitting a piston, something loose flying around in the block. Don't really know unless we pull the motor apart which I really don't want to do... Any thoughts??
Our next plan is to drain the oil to see if anything is visible there Dan Adams is going to head over this coming Sunday with a bore scope to further inspect things.
More ideas on what else it could be will be much appreciated!

Have you had the flywheel off?
A loose flywheel makes all kinds of broken car noises.

Yeah I have had it off. Torqued it back up to the right setting and loctited bolts. James and I are thinking of rigging up a clutch line to disengage gearbox.

You could try pull all the lifters out and get then cleaned and bled

Hey Dan,
The lifters appear to be clean and all pumping up correctly with oil, each lifter has a good oil supply and is rotating nicely in its bore. When the cam lobes face directly up i can get my finger in there and push down on each lifter tiny little bit. All 16 lifters feel the same and when cranked over with no cam covers the lifters all seem really nice and quiet and operating properly.

Try a thin stick magnet down the spart plug holes to make sure theres nothing in there.
Also how long have you run it up for - longer than 2 mins ?? mine used to take that long on a regular basis to shut that noise up.

also with the covers off all the valves move - could have a sticky one although the comp test would have shown that

Motor hasn't run for more than a minute I'd say. Could be worth firing it up again for a bit longer and see what happens??

Had Dan Adams CA expert out today along with his mate who has a bore scope. Was pretty cool having a look down the bores is actually quite a good picture quality that comes up on the screen. Noticed a bit of possilbly head material sitting on the top of #4 piston. Cranked it over by hand again and there is a spot that binds, for some reason when James and I noticed it last weekend we didn't think anything of it but Dan assured us that was not normal. Re-checked timing by putting a screwdriver into #1 and actually found that it was out by about 2 teeth so reset that and did another compression test and had about 130psi on #1 and #4 .So we are now thinking bent valve possibly on #4, am now on the lookout for another CA head get it all checked out etc and swap it over and hope for the best and of course replacing all gaskets and what not. Sigh.
