All very valid points gents. You dont want to know how many times I have thought of giving up my C110. It has been at the panel beater for 15 months which does not make me feel any better.

I am ALWAYS tempted by something already going. I have managed (so far anyway) to convince myself that it will be worth it in the end because I know what is underneath all the paint.

One thing I have definately learnt over the 15 years I have been into old Japanese cars is if it has a fresh coat of paint (and you havent done it), keep well away. 8-)

Thats exactly what I work on too! (although the 120y wags couldn't be further from the truth and I know i'm going to pay for it when I strip it down for rust repairs) But as scary as it sounds if its got barely there thin paint and rust in a few places its generally not as expensive and not actually a bad deal. My 1200 was like that and I only had one small patch of unexpected rust because I could see all the other rust!!!

Ok,
I went to look at the 1600 he has for sale too for parts. I can say this:
Guy is a dreamer, talks allot of crap and contradicts himself alot. Says one thing then says the opposite or something that makes his previous statement a lie. For example, he said to me in an email he would not take less than a grand for the car as that is what he had spent on the suspension and bushes alone. Then when I was there he said the car is exactly as it was when he repoed it from another guy who owed him money.

As for that 1200, the panelbeater working on my car who was with me at the time said many or the repairs are sub standard (to be very polite). The gaps in the doors and guards were all off. The strut towers had silicon or or similar smeared around the top seams.

He are some nice contradictions for you:
he says in the auction

has had panel work done and rust repairs all done professionally and in primer ready to paint.

He told us HE did the rust repairs and got the sills folded himself etc. He says he panels beats for work from home....
Not sure what constitutes professional?

Sitting on the original hub caps and crossply's it came from the factrory on and will supply the factory snow chains purchased with the car new.

He also said that to us when we were there. Then 10-15 minutes of him yaking later he said somebody offered him $650 cash for them, which he gladly accepted that night. Soo which statement is correct???

I say keep at it with your Datsun. 3.5-4k would pay for some very decent panel beating!

keep away, keep well away.

repoed himself? That sounds fraught with warning bells/legalities in itself! Wouldnt be the first time I have heard of this happening and then the guy it was originally taken from takes it back from the new owner (which would be you if you bought it.)

sounds kind of like Maldat is the sellers name Malcom?

He said the 1600 was repoed.
Guy's name I think is Sabin or at least thats whats in the email.
He lives in Bishopdale

Went and checked out the sedan for a looksee and it doesnt look too bad...as in no rust in the usual places however we all know how it can be hidden quite nicely. But as Bede says the guy does seem to talk a lot of rubbish and contradict himself a lot of the time. I have always wanted a sedan though...tough spot...

Meh if you are looking for a panel beater in september, the guy doing mine charges out $25 an hour cashie, or $35 on the books. Does an awesome job though. Check out my build thread for examples! He is free in september when he is finished on my 1600.
