Well after much browsing of Z31 forums and staring at wiring diagrams as well as educating myself about transistors I was a bit better off than before. Fortunately I also had a spare PTU module off my parts car.

Standard module:

I then separated the actual transistor portion (metal can/bracket) from the plastic bit with the wiring connectors

Imagine a cheesecake - the black plastic bit was like the base of the cheesecake, and the filling was this black rubbery stuff. I managed to carefully pick it all out with a small knife and expose the wring - once this was done, and knowing from reading other forums which terminal on my new module needed to go to the blue wire on my old module (that splits off into two, one for the tach feed signal) I was able to make a pretty good guess how things needed to go. I drew up a bit of a diagram to make things easier for myself.

I then managed to dodgy up some temporary wiring.

Despite how crappy my wiring was, it worked! I then took the whole crappy assembly off, made up a permanent setup using proper plugs, heatshrink etc. and reinstalled it and went for a drive. What a difference! The car starts much easier (not that it was bad before), revs up way quicker as if it has a lighter flywheel or something, throttle response is vastly better and no more stumbles and misses!

Far and away the best mod I've done to this car, and the most cost-effective as well.

Haha got to love electrics on cars eh. Glad it's all sorted!

What's the actual issue with the old ones? The DR runs one the same, wonder if it's worth upgrading it too?

From what I've gathered they're just not that good - I've read dozens of comments from S12 and Z31 owners all describing the same sort of symptoms my car had and all raving about the improvement the PRW-2 makes. I don't have a clue about electrical stuff, I just know it works ridiculously well. If the R30 has the same type of PTU as mine then I say go for it, you will be shocked at the improvement.
