Hi,

I have just got myself a 1983 C31 Laurel factory LD28 manual  .
I am wanting to find out if it would be possible to fit a IRS rear end in to it and if so from what car R30 Skyline or a C31 with IRS etc.

I have been searching all over the place for this info but cannot find it anywhere, any help would be great.

Thanks.

I had a C31 Medalist w/ IRS, L20ET. Member dirtyleppa has one too..ask him? As for fitting a non-standard rear end, its probably a job involving cutting the floor out of an IRS donar and welding into yours, as mounting points will be drastically different i fear..

yay another C31 owner. as far as an IRS swap, your best bet would have to be a factory IRS C31, or maybe r30 as you suggested. i would personally go for the c31 but finding parts will difficult. why not just stick with the solid rear end?

you could possibly try a 910 bluebird sedan, but in not 100% sure on that one. have a look under your one for extra mounting points, that may indicate that fitting an IRS may be east. post up some pics in the members ride so we can have a look at it and see what your plans are

yea i see that trying to find a rear end is going to take a bit of looking/time to find but i am in no real hurry as i am just doing it as a bit of a project.

I was wanting to go for IRS as i am wanting to fit some wide 15" wheels all round with stretched tyre's, so I will be wanting to camber it out enough to tuck some tyre in the guard. I saw some pictures on this site of some wrecker with a turbo c31 in the heap, maybe i should go see them.

yeah that was in horopito wreckers yard i think. alot of cars there. its worth a shot i think, as IRS RULES. if you want any measurements, or photos of my setup, let me know.

what are your plans for it? would be goood to see some pics

Cool thanks for the help man.

Im unsure what engine i want to put in it yet, been tossing up between a L20ET or a old RB20DET from old skyline with the cool pinstripe rocker covers 8-) . Will be re-doing all the cruddy old bushes with nolathane and would like to look at coilover suspension but not sure what i would have to do for that, maybe custom? Or somehow adapt s13 front arms and struts to fit with a brake upgrade?
As you can see i have a lot of ideas going through my head as what to do with this car as i want to do it right. I have owned a C34, two C35's and about ten C33's I have a sick fetish for Laurels.

Ill try sort pics when i get my camera working.

well one of my biggest regrets was removing my L20et from the bay to do an RB20DET swap. i kinda ruined my car as it was a factory manual turbo by doing that. i would go for that, keep it old school and original. i pretty sure i still have the ECU, AFM and loom for the L20et if you want it.

as far as coil overs go, you may have to go custom. you maybe able to modify some s13 camber plates to suit the front, but custom would be the way i would go. what brakes are you running on the rear? disc or drum?

for the front, i have binned the standard 1 piece hub/rotor in exchange for some 2 piece 910 bluebird ones. that way, the rotor bolts to the hub. aparantly hilux 4pots bolt up with little modification, but i havent looked into this too much, as im just upgrading my pads and rotors

Yea I am wanting to keep it looking as if it was still built in the 80's, hence going for some 15's and getting it paneled and painted in the original white.

My mate has a S12 Silvia that had the same sort of suspension setup on the front and managed to just swap it over with S13 stuff and is now running S13 coilovers in the front which is what i am going to have a go at.

As for brakes it has the factory drum rear which i want to bin when i try the IRS rear swap and the front mite just go with standard S13 as i wont be able to fit much bigger inside the 15' rims.

Stroke a L28 out to L31 or L32. You already have the crank and L28's shouldn't be hard to find up there. The other bits aren't hard that hard to find.

That sounds like a idea, so you just use the LD28 crank and the rest L28 bits?
