l18 into 1600....some advice

Post by nosebleed »

so, after the agony in the shed yesterday i went and bought a l18...
yup i just want the bitch to run for now...

so i found some info from a couple of sources about l18s in 1600s that they bolt straight in, but what gearbox is used??

can i use the box thats on the fj?

the engine i found cost me $190 and comes with a radiator and is complete from fan to clutch.

you really have no idea do you?
I reckon give it a month and the your whole car will be back on trade me.

L18 and any L series box are bolt in the long boxes require drive shaft mods (i think or is it the short boxes? i cant remember)

if your original front X member is reversed to fit the FJ you will need a new front X member and probably new gearbox one.

i dont think the crossmember has been reversed...

i just want it to run, the fj is just a headache for me..so it will take up space in the corner of the shed...i favor re-vin over the fj...i had a think about what needs to done to get it to a running state, and its just gonna take a crap load of time and money...would rather spend that money on getting it one the road and handle and stop better.

i take it the fj box is a long box then? judging by the fact that theyv modded the shifter hole.

Im pretty sure they would have reversed the xmember to fit the FJ.

the shifter on a FJ gearbox sits further back which is why the shifter hole would be modded as to whcih driveshaft is used im unsure sorry

For revin purposes, you need to make the car appear as stock as possible. You'll be able to get an Lseries four speed for $40-50. Post a picture of your front Xmember, and we can tell you if it's been reversed or not. I'm almost certin that 720's have the sdame "mid sump" as the 510s do. If your xmember had been reversed, you will need an new one. You'll also need a stock g/box xmember, and driveshaft. I have a stock 510 driveshaft you can have for $25. Remember, focus on getting the car drivable as stock as possible 1st, make it go, steer, and stop after it's been revined.

fitting a l18 will need stock 1600 sump and oil pickup with cross member in stock position .... tell us the number on side off gearbox man ......sounds like you got a 71b gearbox this should fit your l18

yeah i had to fit an L16 sump and pickup onto the L18sss motor that went in my 69 1600 back in the day, easy swap and bolts straight up with no hassles.

ill take you up on that driveshaft...ill be over in 2 weeks on my weekend off..

ive got 2 spare front crossmembers and 2 gearbox ones.so no probs there...
the crossmember bends towards the front, next to the swaybar, not to the back by the drag link.. if that makes sense..

i should be able to grind any L18 markings into a L16 by carefully grinding the part of the 8 to turn it into a 6 :Jelly:
