1970 datsun 521

Found this girl on trademe in 2011.

After viewing it once, i split with a wad of cash, and had it on the back of a trailer heading back to base.

IT had heaps of rust.
For instance, the bonnet had about 20mm of bog covering the whole left side, which had cracked up (which it always does being that thick) and allowed water in to rust the bonnet right through. Some one had done a dodgey repairs on the bottom corners of the windscreen, but had left the top edge unsealed (probably becasue they couldnt be bothered taking the screen out), so water was leaking in and filling up the sills. the attatchment points for the front guards were all rusted away, so they welded the guards straight to the body. The sills were probably in the worst condition, someone had directly welded over top of the old sills, without cutting any rust out, so when i cut the sills off, everything below the bottom door hinge was rotten.

anyway im not going to let all of this put me off, if you start a project, you finish a project.

Most of the grill and headlight surrounds etc were in relatively good condition, as with the bench seat. the dash board looks pretty aweful but im thinking ill recover that in some nice black fabric.

heres a list of the things ive done so far:
pulled the whole car apart, rebuilt the corners of the windscreen, rebuilt the headlight structure, de-spot welded the front panel that houses the indicators and repaired all the rust behind this, removed the cab from the chassie, begun to replace the left and right inner and outer sills.

future plans:
Get the body completely rust free, choose and fit a late model motor and 5spd gearbox, replace the old kingpins and drums with a navara front end, possibly upgrade the diff, panel and paint the car (thinking a nice deep red) and thats about it. I would love to find and fit a 521 wellside tray but ive heard these are as rare as anything, so if anyone knows of a wellside in any condition, please get in contact with me. With the engine, options are, a toyota 20v 4age and 5spd box, a 2.7 turbo navara engine, or a ca18 de. the main thing im going for here is enough power to cruise comfortably, whilst not loosing to much fuel efficency.

any suggestions on the engine choice etc?

Welcome to the forum!

1st. I love those utes.
2nd :useless:
3rd I love these utes
4th Lewis Horrel is an auto upholsterer so should be able to hook you up
5th I love these utes (not sure if I mentioned this yet)
6th Sills in these are easy to bend up so you should be sweet getting some made up or buying some from a guy in Dunedin who sells sills on trade me.

Good luck with the build!

yeah welcome to the forum dude. If you go to a hosting website and up load the pics, it can resize the pics for you. I think I use imageshack, and that does it for me.

These utes are pretty cool to be sure. I'd also consider an SR20de as a power plant for your ute. They make reasonable power, and good on gas, and can be bought pretty cheaply.

There is a full running cut of the Fj20et on trade me at the moment :D

Cheers guys for the welcoming, finally managed to get some pics up, do have more to come too.
i suppose a sr20de wouldnt be a bad engine to install, after all its all aluminium so itle be light.
Oh and i forgot to mention that i already own the silver top 4age and rwd gearbox combo, so basically its either the sr20 or the 4age, anyway that is far down the track.

i will be bending up my own sills in the future, i just need to work out what exactly there supposed to look like, as the ones i removed didnt sit nicely on the cab.
is there anyone in the south of the north island that has one of these utes that would let me come and make a template of their sills?

I've read that the SR20DE is actually heavier than the CA18DE/DET (cast iron block) so I wouldn't count on it being light. Still a good choice though. Like everyone has said, cheap and easy to find parts, with good power/torque and economy.

Hey dude
Good to see another 521 on the forum!
Ive got a 69 621
I fully recomend the first thing you do is buy a wrecked old 720 and take your body off the 521 chassis and fit it up to the 720 chassis
Its a little bit of cutting in the inner guards
2 holes drilled for the cab mounts

Sooo much easier and it has heaps of benefits
Better brakes all round(Disc Front)
Better front suspension

Plus they come with L series engine factory
So you can either build up a wild L20 with twin carbs or easier yet leave the L series mounts and swap some rubbers around and bang your CA18 bolts up!

Keep up the hard work and seriously consider the 720 swap

Hey cheers for that, thats a great idea swapping the chassie over i might just try that, now im on the look out for a wrecked 720. how does everything fit length wise?

heres some more pics

managed to score some cool looking 15x8 globe's in 6 stud, theyve got a pretty low offset so i hope theyll look alright on the ute and dont hang out too far
Image

Picture with one guard cut off to reveal missing metal and more rust
Image

and heres a bit on some rust that ive removed so far
Image
replaced all round the back of the headlights
Image
Image

De-stitched the whole front panel to get at some rust in behind
Image
Image
replaced the bottom half of the headlight pod
Image
Image

Completed pics of the rebuilt headlight pods and guard mounts etc.
Image
Image
Image

also replaced the two front cab mounting points and surrounding areas due to excessive rust,
Image
Image
also put some gussets in for added strength, didnt seem to take any pics though

And this is how it currently sits as i begin to rebuild the R/h sill, good fun

will try and continue to keep you posted on the progress as it evolves

The 720 Chassis swap does increase the track width. Might make your wheels stick out heaps.

Scored myself some new parts in the weekend.
decided to be genuine and steer away from the 4age, and a good deal came up, so i purchased a vvt sr20de and 5 spd.

also managed to find some cool old school pressed steel 15x7 pressed steel rims that look exactly like a datto i found on the net.
cant wait to finish this body work so i can start mounting this engine and seeing some progress, cutting rust sucks.

this is what i want it to roughtly look like at the end
