Hey i was kicking around the idea with a mate of modifying an independant rear out of skyline or some nissan and bolting it into the rear of a 1200 coupe with an sr upfront , any body seen or mayby done this before????

Any thing is possible and I have seen a few cars with this done. Will come down to your talents and skill. Check oldschool.co.nz as there is a couple floating around there.

It is a serious amount of work, unless you are very handy with a welder i wouldn't bother, skyline stuff is around 200mm too wide from memory so would need to be narrowed quite a bit to start with.
I'd just keep it simple

if you've got the skills, then it'd be rude not to do it.
Speedfreak'd flatmate has put a narrowed up nissan rear subframe into a front tug 323 wagon. So it's plenty do-able. You just need to work out where you're strut towers will go, and how much you're going to need to shorten the track width. Then fab up a jig to hold the subframe square while you cut it down, and reweld it back together. You'd also need to disassemble the half shafts, and have the axles cut down and resplined to suit the narrower track width.

On ce it's all mocked up, you may need to fabricate (Or at the very least alter) the rear chassis rails, as there's a chance that the rear arms might foul. While you're at it huge tubs would also be mandatory.

What bart said, definitely doable especially since you can actually handle a welder, basicallly I wouldn't discount having to cut out everything between the rear tubs and possibly forward to the rear seat crossmember, especially if you want it slammed.

Maddat.com.au in australia (who make fitting kits etc for 1200's) have fitted s13/14 irs to their 1200 ute

Its done quite frequently on Z31's in the USA and is very nearly bolt in with a simple adaption of the sub frame. I can provide the information but I'm not sure it will be very relevant for a much smaller car.

I offered my S12 IRS to Mk1 Escort, wasnt far off but the front mounting points were in the sill region and i wasnt prepared to chop that much out of the car/sacrifice rear seating.
Datto 1600 would probably be your closest bet
