How do you tell the difference?
I have a long nose r200 and 4 cv axle sets but they are in my parents shed at the moment, maybe able to help you out if they are the right ones

What are you trying to determine exactly? All of the R200s as far as I know have the same spline count/size except for GTR diffs and the helical LSDs. 280Z/R30/R31/Z31 axles are all the same where they go into the diff.

yeah your right R200 is all same spline but there are about 3 different cv types that put the axle in a different positions basically i stuffed up on my axle shortning measurement and am now trying to fix it other ways ............

Ahh, I get ya, I think there are two different types fitted to the Z31's, 3 ball bearing non turbo ones and the turbo 5 ball bearing type? I'm fairly certain the non turbo ones are the same as R30 CV's. I've got turbo ones in my car if you want me to take some measurements and I've got a couple of non turbo R30 & Z31 axles in the boot of my R30.
I've read that you can turn the cages in the CV's around to get a few extra mm if you are trying to make them shorter, that's what guys do when mixing and matching CV's for Z's in the States.
What companion flanges are you using and are your axles too short or too long?

dam thanks for that man i didnt realise different sizes for cvs ok so i need to find 5 ball cvs and now im more keen now you think that the cage can be turned around .........i use to have the tin shurroud cvs i think out off 280z and my axles too short for this set up ... i have now got the 3x2 cvs at both ends and now to long i would have to shortin the springs inside to suit

not 100% certain, but i think the 5 bearing cv's in the z31 turbos are a larger shaft than the non turbo's too.
i have one apart in the shed somewhere, if i can find it, i'll do a spline count/measure for you.

spline count is 27 at both ends for a z31 turbo halfshaft. OD is between 29.3mm and 29.5mm.
shaft length is 405mm give or take, including the extra overhang past the circlips that retain the cv.
also its a 6 ball type cv. always thought they were 5 for some reason.
looking at it, i dont think the inners will give you any more length, as they appaer much the same.
the shaft itself is shorter than the 3X2 shafts, and flipping the outer cv gains arounf 1/2 an inch.
if you want any other measurements, let me know...
p.s.dont have a 3X2 shaft in bits to compare sorry.

So Shane the axle splines on the CVs are the same for the 3x2 and the tin shurroud cvs is that right?
