Hello, on Bart's suggestion I figured starting a thread might be a good idea hopefully there's some interest in another 280zx here. First of all I wanted to say thanks again to Chris from Firestone on Langdons Road for the tyres and putting me on to this site, secondly thanks to everyone who helped out organising the 2011 Akaroa trip. I didn't make it all the way there before I had to go to work but I still had fun. Anyway, before today the only things that have happened to my car are servicing, new tyres, fixing one of the locks and a new alarm and immobiliser.

This is mine, parked the wrong way around. First cruise, so be kind. These aren't my photos and can be found here as well http://www.nzdatsun.com/forums/viewtopi ... =16&t=2973

So after some rough corners on the cruise my radio started to give up the ghost, losing signal and volume. Not to mention the cd player in it already not working so last night I decided enough was enough and purchased some goodies from a place called Quality Car Audio. They also did my alarm, nice people.

This is what I'm replacing... It came like this so don't blame me.

Pretty mangled wiring job from the last person to touch it. I'm unsure what the light bulb is for.

This is the "finished" product. I say finished but what I mean is I need to procure some sheet metal and learn how to make it into brackets so the speakers are attached to the car at more than one screw point. Also some more sheet metal to fit in the hole in the console around the head unit to hide the wires and keep it from sliding around.

Next step is to do the bracket and console thing this weekend. You might be wondering what will happen to the 6x9s, hopefully also this weekend I can knock together something like this http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/SP/50-5351 out of mdf and carpet. That's the plan anyway. Apologies for the big pictures, I'm not really sure how to resize them here. That's all for now.

Welcome aboard Henry, great to meet you at the weekend, Hope you got the 100K dinger sorted now you have some real sounds. What have you learned about the water in your car? Be keen to hear how you get on. Good original looking car you have there.

You can get a surround for the radio like this:

I've got one in my car. If you want one I might look at bringing a couple in from the States as I'll need one for my other car.

If you get the right sized speakers you should be able to put at least 2 screws in, I think that's how mine are held in at the moment. My car doesn't have the side speakers behind the seats but my dash speakers are only held in by two screws.

I forgot to say the other thing the base models don't have is the two needle petrol gauge.

Good to see a thread for your car Henry.
It looks to be a solid base to work from. I hope to see you rock up to future cruises.

On your suspected head gasket, I have a spark plug type fitting, with a compressor tail on it. If we fit that to each of your cylinders, and pressurise it with your radiator cap loose it should show up if your head gasket has a leak in one of the cylinders. I was helping a mate do his valve stem seals with this tool, and when we pressurised number four cylinder it spat antifreeze out the radiator overflow.

Hey Vaughan, no I haven't done the water test yet but what Bart is suggesting sounds like it might be more conclusive evidence. So Bart if you're free some time and want to help me out with that spark plug type fitting thing flick me a text, I'll get you some beer for your troubles. Do you have a picture of that fitted Daniel (do you prefer Dan or Daniel?)? Also what is the other part of the petrol gauge showing? Cheers Jabo, is yours a 280zx as well? In any case, looking forward to seeing another Z next time. I'm not looking for any parts just yet but if I am later on I'll send you a pm. On a side note, I saw a very nice red 240z out at Original Foods today does anyone here own that?

The little fuel gauge shows between 1/4 tank and empty. Pretty useless but funny. I'll take a photo of my radio install tonight.
