How does an S13 engine differ from an S14 engine?

Inlet manifold and it looks like that one has VVT.

Yep inlet manifolds are different and S13 engine fits better into 1200s.

How can you tell if it has VVT or not? And is it a bad thing?

VVT is fine. Just adjusts the intake cam in the higher rev range. You can tell be the notch at the front of the intake side of the rocker cover. See how it sticks our further than exhaust side? It's too fit the VCT gear into.

I also thought S13/S14 mounting was the same? Or is it the intake manifold that is where it makes life easier?
