A friend and I are in the process of restoring two Datsun 312's. One is a blue, NZ assmbled sedan that has been in our family since new and the other, a wagon from about 1968 (recently sold to a friend). They have both not been registered since about 1990. What is the process to VIN a classic car?

Also on a side note,
Some very cool wee cars you have there. Any chance of some more pictures and maybe a wee write up on them

Hi and thanks for the info. I'll let Terry know the re-registration process. He has the registration number as I do for the 312 Sedan. I am off overseas for 4 weeks on saturday but will post some more pics and a writeup after I get back.

Hi and thanks. Yes some specs would be helpful. my email is
andrew@azzmax.co.nz. We do have an owner's manual for the car that does have some information in it but any additional spec details would be helpful. My father worked for Datsun for about 25 years and actualy sold the 312 Sedan to my grandmother (my Dad's mum) as a new car. He also sourced the wagon for his sister a few years later. we do have some spares for the sedan. The wagon is being worked on at this very moment and spluttered into life just yesterday. It seems to be ok, but needs a real good clean and all fluids and hoses replaced as well as the brake lines. I think the same will be true for the sedan.

the re-vin process is very straight forward, but like a lot of things can be quite daunting to some, I would advise looking around to find maybe 2 possible options (if possible ) regarding people who do this, take the time to go and talk to these people first regarding how they would like to see the car presented, some will want the rear seats and door cards removed to check for rust, others may require a certificate from a rust repair certifier, as to the condition of the body, this is not as bad as it sounds, and will give you the piece of mind that the car will not be regected during the vin process for this. if any rust or corrosion is present the rust certifier will, or should advise on the best way to fix this, which could be anything from a quick wire brush and rust kill on surface corrosion, to a proper cut out and fix, if you have the skill to undertake any repair of this nature, if needed ,then you will need the repair checked off, before its painted, ie repair must be viewed before any filler is applied, if necesary.Once your repairs are complete and repair cert is aquired (where applicable) its only a case of taking it back to your vin person of choice (usually the person you found most helpfull and enthuesiastic about what your doing) and they will do a comprihensive warrant check before issueing you with new licence plates a vin tag a warrant and 12 months rego.
then you can drive home the long way with a great big smile on your face.
