Hi guys - those of you out there who have an L6 help me out and let me know roughly what fuel milage you are achieving.

I have a stock albeit 25 year veteran L26 and with twin SU's
On a 50-60L tank I achieve
around 200 - 250Km round town
around 300Km round town and occasional motorway driving
380 - 400Km on a long distance trip

I can watch the fuel gauge move as I am driving and it distresses me at the amount of fuel my 240 uses. I'm sure its a lot more than it should do. (it used the same amount when it had a single carb, the twin SU's have made negligible difference)

Any stats you guys have would be appreciated.

Cheers

PS - I am a fairly nanna driver 99% of the time so its not the lead foot causing it.

I used to have a 1982 C31 Datsun Laurel 2.4 with the L24 carb motor and 3spd auto which used to return around 11.3km/l (32mpg) on an open road trip of nana driving. Thats around 600km of open road driving. The Motor World road test for the Datsun Laurel in 1981 says the fuel consumption guide should be between 8.3-10km/l (23-29mpg), which will be town driving vs country driving.

My current 1985 C32 Nissan Laurel 2.4GL 5spd manual, which also has the L24 carb motor, does 6.5km/l (18mpg), with no difference between town or open road driving or how its driven. Its on LPG and needs the regulator adjusting which should fix that problem, just waiting on the mechanic to install his new LPG tuning gear. Be interesting to see the economy after having it tuned.

Round town driving economy would depend on the number of stops and starts, short cold trips, longer warm trips etc.

I have a carbied L28 and I have to say the fuel consumtion is what I can only discribe as appalling around town but a bit better on the open road and thats with a fully reconditioned carb. Hope that helps or aleast makes you feel better about your fuel consumtion

Distant memories remind me that my L24 drank an alarming amount of fuel when I drove it with my lead foot and not much better with my normal hoof. Not really made for going slow though. New engine will be considerably worse, oh well.

Thanks for the input guys - makes me feel better about my abysmal fuel consumption..

I am going to run a wideband for a month and take some readings. Then replace the needles if its out heaps..

Shout it a good tune up. You know the normal stuff. Your nozzles should be about 1.5 turns if they are 240z carbs IIRC.

Anyways -I have fitted the wideband today (Thanks Sentra - muah xoxox lubs)- ran it at my prior uneconomical settings - AFR ranged from 10:1 - 15:1 (idle was 10:1) but mostly hovered around the 11:1 mark - from previous information I know it used 42.5litres in 270-280Km at these settings

Changed the needle to jet height by 2.5 turns per carb - ended up at an approx average of 14:1 (idle was 12.5:1)

Wound it back .5 a turn and ended up with an average of 13:1 - range was mainly between 11.5:1 and 15.5:1 (idle 11:1

I will leave it as these last settings for now and will fill fuel tank tommorow morning and run a tank through before trip to palmy on Friday night - will report back once again after the weekend..

fingers crossed it won't cripple me still..
