L18

I have brought a going L18 Engine.
I am wanting to re ring and bearing it and put my good head and gear on it so I can do a hill climb in a month.
Were is the best place to by rings and bearings from and is there a such thing as good brand of rings and bad brand etc.I wouldnt have a clue never had to do this before.
Any help would be much apprieciated

Believe it or not, repco do some good rings called protec rings, they are self honing and have been really reliable. But it has been a while since I have had to rering a motor, so could be better ones about now.

If it's for a competition motor ACL do race rings which have a lower friction coefficient, but your engine will use more oil and need rebuilding again sooner.

is it going to be a "good" motor, or sa "temporary" motor?

For a temporary engine, it's less important what you use. UDC bearings are okay. (at least I think thats what they are called) Or ACL stuff is plenty good enough.

The parts aren't as crucial as the assembly process. Getting the block honed correctly, with the cross hatch pattern. I've seen too many home hone jobs where the lines are too horizontal. If you're honing it yourself, you need to get the speed as low as possible.

And having everything clean is critical.

Its more a temp motor until ive got say 6-7 grand to spend on getting someone to build a goodie,which might be a wee while.I dont want to go crazy on it but the good thing with L series is you dont need to spend plenty on the bottom end most the power is in the top and the bolt on bits.I got a full re-built head and pretty much brand new webbers and a ground cam willl be going in so not too bothered about bottom end just want it reliable.
It is getting built by a mate of mine,he builds 30 thousand dollar scania engines so a Little L series cant be hard.

have you Pulled it down yet? Check to see how much wear the bores have. Use the rings that it has to measure how worn the ring grooves are. You really need a bit of pricey gear to do it right. If you crank has journal ovality, or your ring grooves are too sloppy you wont get as good a results as you might hope for.
I ussually find that my bits are just beyond the limits of safe reuse.

Tried that even the smallest bottle brush hone would to go near the L18 big trucks fucken big tools also check you dont have a lip in the top of the block new rings revs and a lip spells bang knock knock bang shit

Yeh i realise that, I would doubt very much he would be using the big gear on it.He knows what hes doing he has built plenty of engines.
