Hello everyone… well I am a new here. I have lurked around here for a while but did not want to post until our project was a little closer to getting fiber-glassed. Here is a quick background overview… About a year ago… I decided to design and build my own car completely from scratch. I started with 3D models and over time learned techniques and methods to bring my 3D models to full scale. I started in my garage and started to construct the first car out of wood and foam creating the first body buck. After learning a lot about auto regulations for both US and Europe I decided to make changes and start over with a better and more practical design. At this time the project spread across the planet like wild fire and has brought a lot of attention on us for this which is cool and overwhelming at the same time. The project was dubbed as the Bailey Blade and so that’s what it’s going by as of now. We are almost finished with the second foam body buck which I call Blade 2.0 and we are getting ready to apply a thin fiberglass shell over the car so that we can work in all the styling details and apply a finish to pull molds off of. I estimate in the next month we will start with the fiberglassing.
I decided to join here and share this project and hopefully learn more from all the skilled individuals on this forum. So far this is the best place I have found where people are doing great custom work and seem to have good knowledge about fiberglass.
I have been taking photos and video blogging the whole process… Fell free to check out all the Videos and let me know what you think. Also here are a few photos…
Question: What do you guys recommend covering the foam of the car with? I was going to use Epoxy Resin with 10oz woven cloth to cover the car and create a hard shell. I will probably apply two to three layers in some areas, at least two though. The Epoxy is pretty expensive and I thought about painting the car with acrylic paint to protect it against polyester resin and use that instead. Any thoughts on this… ?
