Anyone got a link, or know who to shim up Clutch LSD's?
I just picked one up for a very sharp price, and I'll like to get a handle on what's involved, without pulling it apart!

Re: Shimming up clutch LSD's?
Did you mean, Viscous LSD's as that is what the article from the D1NZ forum is describing. I have done this to my old C33 and have found it to be very effective although depending on how much abuse it gets it will wear out over time.
It takes a bit of time todo but in my opinion is well worth the time invested, somewhere on the D!NZ forums is a list of the part numbers for the various thickness shims, which will usually have to come ex japan so you may be prepared to wait a while, I won't go through how to install them as its covered in great detail and with photos in the above mentioned post.
Cheers

Re: Shimming up clutch LSD's?
They sure can! Shimming up viscous LSD's is actually a wet dream which has zero effect on the actual viscous cartrigde, and merely removes all the backlash from the side gears/idler gear mesh. (and at the same time forces out all the oil from between them too) Once the viscous cartridge is smoked, I suppose it doesn't really matter as diffs are still plentiful and cheap.
Adding shims predates viscous centers, and refers to applying greater preload to the clutch plates, and increasing the breakaway torque between the axles. It's alos possible to shim up cone type LSD's too. (Although I am not a fan of these types of centers)

Ohh well you learn something new everyday, The viscous I shimmed up seemed to do the job, mind you it was preloaded so much it was basically just a locker, but its did the job for the track days. Even so wouldn't the method of shimming up a clutch type LSD be pretty much the same as doing it to a viscous

Re: Shimming up clutch LSD's?
not the same really. Clutch lsd uses the plate friction to prevent differentialtion.

Re: Shimming up clutch LSD's?
wtf , why on earth would you want to load up the spidergears , thats how you make them go boom ....
however if the viscous center is poked then the diff is fucked anyhow i spose .
i myself wouldnt do it .. thats silly
