Michael's 180B Sedan Z18ET

Post by Mikewazowski »

Here's some pictures of my 1974 Datsun 180B Sedan.

When I first bought it, it was a tired looking car with a 3 speed auto

So the first step was to fix the rust and paint it

Then replaced the old suspension with new shocks and Dobisport Lows

After driving it round for a couple of months with the old auto gearbox, I snagged a 5 speed dogleg gearbox and began the process of changing it to a manual 8-)

Was so stoked to get the new gearbox in and working. Got stuck on the inhibitor switch for a while, but once that was all sorted she was all go :D

I decided that I wanted to upgrade the brakes just in case I wanted to go down the engine conversion route at some point in the future. So in anticipation of that I had to get rid of my Hustlers
That was ok though since I found some Impul FZ wheels 8-)

Prior to converting the front and rear brakes to R31 Skyline I also found an R160 CLSD out of a Subaru Leone Turbo. Score!

Here is a photo of the R31 disks going on the rear, I don't have a photo of the fronts.

I drove round for years with the original L18 trooping along under the bonnet. I eventually scored a Z18ET with gearbox, radiator, loom, ecu, etc and went about changing it over.

The car is running well at the moment. Aside from my second-hard VL commodore pump dying on me halfway back from Hamilton, it has been very reliable 8-)

BTW ignore the dates on the photos, they aren't correct

Here is a recent photo of the 180B with my newest addition.... another 180B

Cheers for the comments :D

I originally bought the blue 180B (my sister calls it the smurf) to use for parts, but I'm thinking now if I can that I'd like to get it back to WOF status and get it on the road. Haven't really thought much further than that at this stage since I'm off to Palmerston North for work for 13 weeks, so it will have to wait until I'm back

Now that I'm finally back from Palmy I can get my car certed... Yaaaaay :D
Just finishing off a few things:

- Relocated windscreen washer bottle further forward so I can fit pod filter on my AFM. Just need new hose to plumb it in.
- Bought a set of lower ball joints (need left one for WOF so figured I'd do both if it's not too difficult)

Aside from that I think it's pretty much ready to go for its cert.
Anyone know of a good cert place in the Bay of Plenty?

Thanks :D I like them as well, haven't seen another set on the road yet.

Yeah Paul is a mate of my Dad from way back I think. I was going to go there but then like you say he has taken off for a while. Just want to go somewhere fair, doesn't need to be dodgy
Speaking of driveshaft hoops, will I need one? I didn't really think about it since I used my standard driveshaft and the Z18ET gearbox bolted up to the factory crossmember and was the same length as the old box.
