Daniel's Laurel C32 project

Post by gojozoom »

So,

I decided to perform a "face-lift" on my 1986 Laurel C32 LD28.

My plan is :

New shocks (they're pretty worn)
Full engine checkup (reconditioning if needed....I hope not)
Turbo/inter-cooler installation
Replace auto gearbox to a 5-speed manual
Full body repaint (NO MORE WHITE PLEASE  ) and some minor bodywork
Hide exhaust pipe, so I'll be able to say it's a hybrid
Leather upholstery in the interior (gearbox, steering wheel, etc)
Infinity kappa audio system with 2 DIN head unit (alpine or jvc)
Modgies with white wall tires
Chrome plating/re-paint stuff

And here she is in her current condition:

...and some light-weight off-roading:

I'll start the project on the 1. September...I'll keep you updated!

damn, thats a minta. love the fact its a hard top to.

was speaking to a guy i know who does diesel and turbo tuning. he reckons the cheapest part of a turbo conversion for your LD28 is getting the pump uprated. he was telling me people have asked him about this sort of conversion in the past, and it has cost upwards of $3000 to get all the necessary bits, and get it all done and dusted.

i would suggest asking as many questions as possible so you dont waste your money on parts you may not need, and try do a good portion of the physical work yourself. even if you dont know, the internet helps heaps, and people dont mind helping you out if they see you are interested in what you are doing.

maybe the only thing you cant do yourself is modify the fuel pump. but there will be places who can do what needs to be done. the guy i know was saying that in most of these cases, the pump needs to be uprated atleast 10%

The son of one of my dad's mates has a turbo LD28 in a VL commy. Goes real hard so I'm told. He's lunched a few motors, but I think he runs like 20PSI. I should try and get a hold of him.
They don't call me the man with the rubber arm for nothing you know.............

Just a bit of an update on this. My friend went back to Europe for a couple of months and told me to use his Rover MGF until my Nissan gets overhauled. Do you know what happened? That British cr*p broke down 6 times in four months and I had to spend all my money on that bloody MGF instead of the Laurel. Eventually the Rover gave it up, and the engine died at 123,000 km :deadhorse:

My Laurel is 24 years old, it has 230,000 in it and it hasn't broken down in the last 4 years.

Anyway, I'm back on track now, the Laurel has a new WOF and I can carry on with the project.

Next week, the engine will be totally dismantled for a closer look. We'll replace the cam belt, the fuel filter etc, etc.

After that we'll check the gearbox, and the rear diff. I'll also replace the shocks soon.

It will be repainted before Xmas, and I'll try to find some modgies for it. However I've been thinking, and I want it to look rather elegant than mean, so probably modgies aren't the best choice. Any thoughts?

You'll hear from me soon.

i can say for alot of people here that modgies are a no no, but that is just our opinions being spoken. something japanese based would be best, maybe no bigger than 15" in diameter. lower it on some good offset wheels and it will be bangin

Hi guys,

The engine was overhauled, but I'm stuck with a failed alternator...and the closest one I found is in Invercargill (not even sure if it's the right one) I need something this week. I talked to Nissan City, Niscars, and All Nissan Ltd, but they don't have any at the moment.
On top of that the original sticker was damaged, so idon't have the full part number: LR190-417-23100-xxxx.

Do you know anyone close to Wellington who would have such a rarity?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you guys!
