As of 1 November 2010, a new law comes into effect which allows third parties access to your name and address details via your vehicle registration plates.
You are able to elect not to have your personal details released however if you do not do this then anyone will be able to look up your rego plate and get the details from the net without paying anything.

This was posted at oldschool. I couldn't do it as my laptop was down, and the one I was using had broken number keys.

I'm not sure that's quite right. Isn't the new law to restrict access to personal details on the motor vehicle register?4TRUBL wrote:As of 1 November 2010, a new law comes into effect which allows third parties access to your name and address details via your vehicle registration plates.

The details have always been available to anyone who can walk into a post office and give your licence plate number. At least under the new law people will have to make an official information act request to the NZTA or apply for a special authorisation from the NZTA.
Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Correct
They are taking away the current right for anyone to go to the post shop and pay the money and get your details. They are making it so you have to make a formal request to the LTSA to get information. At which point the motor vehicle registry will assess it on case by case basis to see whether they have a legitimate reason for requiring the information.
By opting out you are merely give yourself extra protection by saying they can’t release your information even if someone applies to get it
I imagine that your information would still be available to sources such as the police even if you have opted out though, but atleast the crims can't pay $6 and come steal your car from the driveway!

Re: Availability of personal information - NZTransport Agenc
what nick says, information only available to the police, and it will stop telemarketing companys etc buying your details
