Cheers mate well i had to work late last night so i didn't get much done at all i did check dizzy for play. (the on i have in there now had a little bit of play came off the best running engine i had  ).

I also went and helped a mate fit a car radio to a car and i took the dizzy with me to show his farther (he worked as a mechanic then parts for Toyota for 25years) so knows his old points dizzys pretty well,.

The dizzy i took round (original) had no play in it at all (mint base to start from he said) he said cap and rotor appears to be in good condition as do the points. He said he would bother changing points but would swap condensers (no visual way of checking them).

I'll get a new set of points and condenser and fit those to it making sure i get the gap spot on. Ill get my mechanic mate to come round and teach me how to use a dwell meter. Which will at least teach me a new skill.

While im waiting on the points to show up i'll clean up all the contacts in the wiring swap over my leads and fit the new plugs i got yesterday. If that fails im throwing the hole lot in the bin digging out my electronic dizzy i was going to use on something else and i'll put that in there.

So any other ideas would be great. At least points condenser plugs etc are cheap to replace and gives me a nice clean base. The engine was renewed 1400ks ago so i really should update the ignition system.

Im also going to do a compression test and leakage test cos the head i have on there has been planed (a shitload) and im wondering if that boosted compression and the 1800carbs its run lean and melted the valves.
Spark plugs don't look like they have been running lean though and i i haven't heard and detonation.

Addition things to check.
check wear on the shaft lobes.
But basically anything I could tell you would be easier to be shown by your mechanic mate.

Well its running again. Even my mate isn't exactly sure what the problem was.
Put in new plugs. Fitted dizzy again reset the timing from scratch, sanded all the connections on plugs in the loom etc to get good contacts including the main earth leads. Then it fired up straight away just like it used to.

Either the timing had gotten out a bit. 1 of the bolts was loose.
Or the plugs had all crapped out. Or i wasn't getting good enough connections.

Oh well it all worked anyway. Will still be fitting new points and condenser anyway. For the cost of it may as well then i know the Dizzy is all good.

Thanks for your help. At least i have now learn t that one of my Dizzy i thought was really good had a bit of play in it so that's been sent to the last resort pile.
