Hi Guys
Last night I had the first day of MIG welding Class @ CPIT and found it quite good.
by the end of the year I am hoping to get my NZS-4711 for basic positions ( or whatever they replace it with ) welding ticket
Has anybody else done these courses and can share their experiences, IE quality of teaching or how usefull it has been in the industry or at home?
I'm a shit welder , I can do enough to make brackets and small stuff but I want to be able to weld important pieces of my car and have piece of mind that I am trained and can do it properly. And i work in an office and in the weekend i love getting into the workshop and making stuff.
I know a lot of you guys do welding, any other tips information or even decent places to purchase gear I am interested to hear from you.

i covered basic mig welding in my pre trade course at SIT. was really good. i was taught enough to give me an idea of where to start from, and you just get better with experience.

Re: MIG Welding Class @ CPIT
I've done the Mig, Tig, and arc welding night courses at CPIT probably around 5 years ago lol
they were pretty good I thought.....but then again, I have nothing to compare them to.
good amount of documentation, and classes of less than 15, wasnt too bad.
I only did the basic courses, and never tried to go as far as to get my welding ticket.
but I did ask the tutor about that stuff, and he was happy to explain the requirements e.t.c.

It was a spur of the moment thing to sign up and pay 4 hours before the class started
But its sounding more like a decent way to spend some money, and learn some stuff that can help me out in the car modifying & restoring world.

Re: MIG Welding Class @ CPIT
good on you, what tutor do you have??
As for the 4711 Ticket you should be sweet to pass it by end of the year, I have seen people come through work who say they have it and they can't weld for shit.
As for buying gear, i got my mig from BOC and hire my gas bottle from southern gas. Don't be scared to spend good money on a welder as you get what you pay for. Have used some cheap gear in the past and am glad I got a good one.

NZS4711 and NZS4703 are being replaced by NZS2980. from April I think. If you want the tickets just for your own satisfaction that's cool but if you're not actually needing the ticket for a job I wouldn't bother. The test costs about $200 a plate so isn't exactly cheap if you are doing 3 positions. Unless they include the test in the cost of the course, but normally I think it would be extra. They would be able to tell you whether you were likely to pass the test or not anyway. Does anyone know whether the ticket would help with getting things LVV certed?
