probably not then. If you have electronic ignition, and coils that don't need the ballast then you should be fine. I'm not overly familair with the Z series motors.

Well, after driving to Hamilton and back and driving to work a few times I thought that I'd fixed the intermittant problem. It seems that I was wrong. Dad went to take the sedan for a WOF yesterday and it broke down when he got there and then multiple times on the way home. I'm going to try and get at the condenser to check that out next.
So frustrating; I hate chasing intermittant faults!

Have you had any thoughts about doing the CA18DET Ecu swap mike ?

Yeah James I've definitely considered it, and I can imagine that at some point in the future I will probably look at upgrading the electrics. At this stage though I'm just really keen to find out what is causing this problem and put an end to it. The car runs so well normally that I'm not in a hurry to change anything that I don't have to.
I had a look last night and I couldn't find a condenser (capacitor) on or in the dizzy anywhere...maybe I don't have one? Is this an issue?
Tonight I'll try and test the ignition module, the only problem being: Since the car starts and runs fine most of the time it's going to be hard to check most things and get a conclusive answer.

I had a dirty BG familia that had 3 temp sensors.
One to switch the fan on, one for the reading for the temp gauge and one the car used to determine if the car was overheating and in which case it would kill the engine. And until it thought the car was cold enough it would then just wind over but not fire.
Replaced the sensor and had no problems since.
Not sure how the z18 wiring, ecu sensor setup is but maybe worth a look....
On Another note, James, the guys at Nistune said their V1 board would work with my FJ20ET ecu, just needed to be soldered in place instead of a plug.
Wonder if this is possible with the z18 ecu (around same age I think), and if the Nistune software can then allow CONSULT style gauging from the sensor inputs into the ECU.
Again all ifs and buts. I am sure a quick email to the Nistune guys would answer that.
Atleast then you would have an upgraded programable option and access to all your sensor information for when it shits itself next.

that's Awesome Ging ! this is true in the sense that your thinking, but Nissan sometimes see's fit to install a small capacitor on the side of electronic distributors and it looks exactly like a "points type condenser" but has something to do with smoothing out some current or reducing ignition noise or something.Bartman wrote:Unless you have points, you wont have a condenser.
