What size flange do the z18's have? t25 or t3 flange?

A number of fairly simple things can be done without touching the ECU.

I would start with a Sweetly running well maintained engine, new fluids and filters, check timing, new plugs ect.

with all the simple stuff out of the way.

*A turbo upgrade > not necessarily too much bigger but a more modern better flowing turbo ie a T28 as Ging suggested would be a pretty sweet upgrade.

*A larger free flowing exhaust system with decent mufflers ( not shitbox restrictive ones )

* Less restrictive intake piping & a decent air filter, my car had horribly restrictive path for the air to get from the filter to the turbo and making this flow smoothly is something cheap and easy you can do yourself

*Inter cooler and slightly more boost - by slightly i mean something like, if its 6psi stock you could probably do another 3-4 psi taking into account the pressure drop across the intercooler.

* A new better designed manifold is always going to help thing, but unless you have already done all of the above there is not much point ( especially if you are not touching the ECU )

I am not really familiar with the Z18 but what i have suggested can be applied to just about any turbo engine.

There is tons you can do , I would suggest picking up a copy of Corky Bells Maximum Boost book
The Answer to your Question is NEEDS MORE VG30

FMIC(front mount intercooler)
Wind up Boost say 10psi
Electronic Boost controller
cold air intake
Basic and normally pretty cheap

T28
~$200 second hand, $400 new for chinese knockoff

FMIC
~150 ish by itself plus piping or about $300 for a close enough kit.
(MAX size should be about 450 long x 300 height x 75 thickness)
yes you can go too big.

Boost Controller
~$30 for a cheap wind out controller
>$200+ for electronic boost controller.
Alternatively you can get the spring in the actuator replaced with a 10 pound spring. Turbo Chargers NZ here on Vanguard St can do that for you. That would prob cost about $50.

So stoked to hear this mate

My advice: Drive ute as is, enjoying the simple fact that it works. Turn up to people's houses while they are slaving away on their projects with a big self-satisfied smug grin on your face 8-)

However, if you do want to push the envelope a little, running a CA18 ECU, CAS, etc could help if you are after a bit of tunability, without going for a full-on aftermarket ECU. I say this because the standard computer is an ancient p.o.s and the gate-style flowmeter is a mostrosity. Otherwise, the basic tips that 85_Z31 has given are probably a good place to start.

The Z18's have a T3 flange. An FJ20 DR30 (.63 rear housing) T3 is a common upgrade.

Bare in mind your oil lines made need some adjustments.
