Bear in mind you can leave a classic car unregistered for 2 years without the need for an exemption.

Can't see them returning original plates, today nothing seems to be done that requires effort if a new one can be supplied in it's place, and storage, retrieval would be an issue, they wouldn't take responsibility for your plates.
How do you get this 2 years thing, is that once a car is 40yrs old? I'm too scared to let mine go over, don't want to have to get it all sorted from scratch.

You don't need to Continuously register a car if it is 40 yes old or over. You can let it lapse and it will still stay current as long as you register it for at least 1 day in any 2 year period.

The Email to S Joyce is bouncing back - well if the site is legit then it just be that we are all sending too many emails for their system process and we have in fact created our own DOS on their mail server

You can get a better understanding of the situation based on the the header and who bounced the message (their servers or your ISP/mail providers smtp server) and for what reason (server unreachable etc)

Very interesting thread though so thanks. I recall the demerits points issue being brought up and the people driving with Regos on hold last night on the news but not having to surrender your plates if you abused it.

I have been working in IT for 20 years so yes I do know how email and things work lol - it is the good old message delayed error "cant contact host" so there mail server is down and has been for 37hours lol

What annoys me most about this whole thing is that now they're going to give demerit points as well for people driving without rego, plates etc.

But on the form you fill out to put your rego on hold, it says that you can drive your car if it's for the purpose of obtaining an inspection... but if you've surrendered your plates and go to get a WOF, then you're going to stick out like dog's balls to any pig who sees you... then you're running the risk of getting 20 demerit points for no plates and another 15 or 20 I think it is for driving with the rego on hold if Officer Douchebag decides he doesn't buy your story! For some of us, that would be enough to mean an instant loss of licence, and a court date to try and prove that you're in the right... costing time and $$$$.

This is just another kick in the teeth to modified car owners in this country, really show just how backwards our government is in their thinking.

Me, I'm going to put my car onj hold for another 12 months on April 30th and hang on to my plates just to be safe (even if they are faggy white ones).

Under the law for first time offenders you will still have 2 weeks to get your rego done and then the fine (and demerits with it) are retracted.

Well you never know these days with everybody "in IT" so sometimes it pays to be informative. Like you, I have worked in the industry for years (employed and writing software since 95).

I was more curious to find out from your long headers which server (internal relay, or a relay in between your SMTP server and the great GOVT firewall) was bouncing the email lol.

OT, but whats your core skillset? (networking, hardware, software dev, DB admin etc).

Well in the Dominion Post yesterday they stated that everyone would have to hand their plates in when putting a car on hold, didn't mention anything about singling out 'repeat offenders'. Also, what's a repeat offender? Someone who has failed a WOF inspection more than once? Someone who has had fines in the past for no WOF/reg? I'm sure that there are plenty of us in this category, I know I am. It's just murky and gives too much power to the pigs etc. to make life hard for people who just want to drive old cars.

And they probably wouldn't even have done it if their ACC levies for 600cc+ motorbikes weren't so outrageously unfair.

Another good point, they would have to match the VIN or chassis # up with what the records say, not possible if you don't have the original body tag on your car.

If this comes into affect and they ask me to hand in my plates im going to give them the screw driver and let them do their best to remove my rear plate as there is no way in hell that thing is wanting to come off!

Just take in the whole rear bumper haha, your welcome to take the number plate....... haha
