Datsun power steering conversion

Post by unlimitedpower »

Ive done piss all researching and googleing just thought id put this out there if anyone has done it or knows of anyone who has,

I was thinking how much nicer my 140J would be with power steering. I know it would be a bit of a pain in the arse to fit a rack in there but has anyone looked into using a power assisted steering box.

Maybe something from a S110 silvia or something like that, Are they of the same general dimensions?
Im not dead serious about this just an idea if it can be done simple enough then i could be keen to give it a go.

you could probably retro fit a power steering pump from an L 6 engine from a zed, as well as maybe the steering box. that way you could probably keep all the standard steering rods, ball joints etc

You'd need to find a box with the same length pitman arm as the J, or else swap the idler arm from the donor car too? Otherwise the drag link wouldn't be parralle to the Xmember. Different pitman/idler arms might cause the drag link to foul on the xmember or sump. Best bet would be to find a rack from some other car I'd say.
They don't call me the man with the rubber arm for nothing you know.............

find a power steer rack that is the same distance between the inner rack joints (the inner pivot points) as you drag arm, mount it as close to the front of your car as possible. The height of the rack mount is a little trickier but if you mounted it at the height the drag link is at when pointing straight ahead you'd be pretty close bump steer wise.
short answer is something would need to be adapted, although tricky its not impossible

I see both your points and its most likely why the conversion is not a common thing,
I'll do some more looking into it maybe a rack from a micra or something like that as im guessing its going to have to be pretty small,
