What do you reccomend a Forged ca18det use for run in oil?

Iv been told Elfs sae 30 for 700kms then change oil and filter to Motul 300v. What do you guys think? I understand there's no best way to do it but just wanting some confirmation about the sae30 really

5w50 in NZ conditions man. Dont full it up to the full line fill it up to halfway between low and fill on the dipstick for optimum performance

For running in they usually do recommend a single weight oil like SAE 30, but I've been told that for anything modern you shouldn't use a proper running in oil, just something with not many detergents.

I think when I ran mine in I just used some 15w40 or something like that and changed it after 500ks, I can't really see it making a whole lot of difference, I'm sure lots of brand new cars are run in on their normal oil which these days is usually full synthetic and pretty thin.

Have asked all the reliable engine builders (gavin at HPE bring the one Iv sort of listened to I guess) everyones given me different opinions...Gavin said Elf sae30 for 700 kms then straight into Motul fully syn. Car aid said similar, cliff bonds said penrite runnin in oil for 1000kms, then any 15-40. Others said 15-40 straight off. Im asking for opinions based on your own experiences of success from you guys.

I ran in my vg30 from 15w40 bog standard mineral oil

it runs sweet as a nut doesn't use any oil and doesn't blow by or fume or anything bad that happens when rings aren't bedded in properly.

I have done 2000km on this mineral and am currently awaiting my Synthetic Ams oil

my block used STD pistons and was only a Hone & Re ring so the clearances wern't loose but more in middle of spec and 10w40 or 15w40 also happens to be the recommended oil based on my Nissan Factory Workshop Manual for the temp's we see in NZ.

As far as running in oil I would probably go with what matches your Bearing clearance more than anything else as every engine is different.

If you didn't Mic the crank & rods yourself you may want to get in touch to the person that did as you wouldn't want to shorten bearing life just because a different oil worked for somebody else.

The best thing to do would be to Call Ronnie at Warehouse Auto Parts in Rotorua as He knows his stuff.
Get him to reccomend you running oil and what oil to run after running in.

I'd be more concerned with your camshaft than bedding in the rings. An engine like yours will have moly top rings, that will bed in very quickly. Get it up to temp, time it, and run it up the hill. Avoid idling like the plague.

^ this i know its a slightly different kettle of fish but i have rebuilt many many larger diesel truck engine and found the best way to bed them in is to start check for leaks pressure etc then find and biggest hill i can and go up in the lowest gear it will allow to lug the shit out of the motor . a couple fo those engines are coming up to 700,000k now and are still happy as larry
i just use 15w40 diesel oil in both diesel and petrol , have yet to find a problem , keeps the motor sparkling clean
