'81 Sunny Clutch Release Bearing

Post by Tmyers »

Hi all,

Any idea how much it'll cost for a reasonable garage to replace the clutch release bearing? It's making that scratching noise at idle so assume it's likely to be the problem.

Cheers!

if you going through the hassle of changing the release bearing, then you might as well replace the clutch and get the flywheel skimmed while you at it. as for price, most mechanics would charge anywhere from $50 and hour upwards. its not a really big job, so maybe grab a mate who has a slight clue what to do and dive into it

Pretty sweet job on a Sunny, shouldn't be more than an Hour I'd say. Are you sure it is the release bearing? Does the noise go away when you apply light pressure to the clutch peddle, or once the clutch is fully disengaged? Or of course does it not go away at all while idling? It could be the Input Main bearing.

Noise goes away when fully disengaged I think, and starts when slight pressure is put on the clutch. Would this still be the release bearing then? I'm only really starting to learn about engines from my old man at the moment so still very much a novice! Cheers all :D

Confirm when you get the noise, but from that description of it only being when you have some pressure on it certainly sounds like a release bearing. If it was alll the time at idle but went away when clutch was in it would be gearbox normally.

Double check to be sure. A poked thrust bearing will still make a noise when fully disengaged.

Probably will be the release bearing I've had the same problem before clutch was rooted and the release bearing was seized and nearly wore right through the pressure plate fingers. should be able to get clutch of in 45 mins max just need to make sure the clutch plate is lined up so the gear box goes on easily lubricate everything that moves I.e where the release bearing slides dowels either in the gearbox or engine and re adjust the free play in clutch pedal

Thanks all. I've been driving it a bit more frequently of late and after the car warms up for a while the sound diminishes until it is almost completely gone. But then returns when the engine is cold. Would it be advisable to just replace it anyway?
