Another weird electrical problem

Post by atchernv »

So I got my car back from the panel beaters after an extended period of rust removal and drove it around for three days without any issues, then yesterday after I stalled it once getting it started the CHARGE light stayed on even though the car was running (and the lights were working etc), it went off after a little while but now my indicators, fuel gauge and water temp. meter have stopped working :(

Ive checked over the fuses and they are all OK, also the indicators flash normally when I put on the hazard lights except for the marker lights on the fenders. Which makes me think back to the panel beaters saying something about having to extend the wires for those (even though they were connected perfectly fine before)?

Anyone have the slightest clue what the problem could be? And the fix
*Also this is for a '78 120y sedan

Check the voltage at the battery. Both at idle, and see if it it picks up when you give it a rev up.
Also, check your fuses with a multi meter. I've seen those god-awful glass festoon fuses lose their circuit inside the end cap, where it can't be seen. (took me almost a week to figure out why the headlights wouldn't go.

Which wires exactly did they say they lengthened? That sounds rather dubious to me. They didn't melt some did they? Also welding on a car with the battery connected can harm the charging system too.

I'll try to get my hands on a voltmeter at work. They said when they put it back together the wires for the marker lamps on the fenders didnt reach, although to me it looks like they've plugged up the hole I had passed them through before which is why they wouldnt reach.. I'm thinking I'll hit them up about it tomorrow when they open again. I hate things going wrong in the weekend.

Thanks Kane, it's all sorted now actually.

They didnt exactly say as much but its sounds like what happened was they buggered up the plugs on the marker lights when they pulled off the fenders without disconnecting them first; the fuel gauge and water temp. were actually on a fuse that I had missed when checking them with a flashlight at night
