ok so new engine is in the 140j,
has fuel and air but no spark,
would fire but not run
and now it just turns over,
i put my multi meter on the coil and got nothing at all, so im picking either the coil or the ballast resistor is gone.
so question for you gurus,
do i need to keep the same kind of coil with resistor or go for a different non resister coil?

See my reply in your members ride thread.
It depends what type of distributor you have as to what coil to buy

Re: l20b spark problem
If you are running points on both the L14 and L20 then the coil etc should be fine. Pull the (+) cable off the coil and check if you have power at this point with the key on. If you do reconnect it, if not run a wire from the (+) of the battery to the (+) of the coil for test purposes, ( make this easy to remove as it will get hot if there is a short). There should be a wire from the (-) of the coil to the Dissy, (assuming you are running points) wired like this should give you spark when you wind it over. If it doesn't pull the wire off the Dissy and check if it has power when the key is on. If not trace back till you find power and correct the fault.
If it has power remove the Dissy cap and turn motor by hand till points are fully closed, open points with an insulated screw driver, is there a spark at the points? Is it strong enough to jump from the coil to Dissy HT lead to an earth 5mm away from the end of it? If so clean or fit new points and reset points and timing. This needs to be accurate.
If no spark check for power at points when they are open. If no power work your way back toward the coil checking for power, fault may be in the condenser.
Sorry this was suppose to be 2 lines, hope it makes sense.
