ok so the engine is in, and all bolted up, everything is hooked up,
except the wiring which im having a bit of trouble with, i plugged in what i could but there is alot of left over wires with no where to go,
the engine turns over once and then starts ticking,
something must be in the wrong place too because i turn the ignition to on and no dash lights show up until i try to start the car,
im a little lost now,

Sweet. Good work.
Theres not too many wires to check.
Is it getting spark? Its most likely its the ign wires you have wrong.
But on some carbs they have a 'anti deiseling solenoid' and if you don't hook up that wire then the carb won't get any fuel at idle.

I lowered my engine out the bottom when i took it out of my car as getting an engine hoist was to much of a mission,
Then jacked front of car up and pulled engine out on a piece of carpet, Was a mission but its done.
I'll be using one to fit it back in when it comes time to fitting it in,

ok i have a bit of a problem guys,
the l20b is turning over sweet but i have no spark,
im getting no reading at the coil or the ballast resistor,
do i need to replace the coil with a different non ballast one?

Does your l20b have a points dizzy or an electronic dizzy?
Either way you should be getting spark.
To test, you could try run a wire from negative of coil to the distributor, and then a wire from the positive battery to the positive coil terminal.
It should definately run like that (remove the power to the coil to stop engine)
If it still doesn't go, then its not your wiring......maybe dead coil or incorrect points gap?

tried to get power at the coil, its a points dizzy and im getting nothing from the coil at all, im going to check further down the line tonight to see where the problem lies,

ok figured it out, wiring to the ignition switch has heated up and stuck to something else, im picking the indicators so im going to hard wire it all up with a switch inbetween because i need the car this weekend then i will rewire it properly,
all i need to do now is cut a temporary hole in the bonnet stick a small scoop on it until i get new carbs,
bleed the clutch, (easy)
fill the gearbox with oil (not so easy)
ok so advice time because im going to break something soon,
the drain and filler plugs on my gearbox are well and truely closed, i havnt been able to get them off yet,
any tips to loosening them? and best way to refill the box?
i was thinking a hose running through the gearstick hole with a funnel and patience???

I am guessing the box is in the car?
If so this will be a little more difficult, but try to give the offending plug a sharp hit with a heavy hammer directly on the end, as if trying to hammer it into the gearbox, this should shock the threads, Steel into Alloy freezes and needs shocked to break the freeze.
It may cost a few bucks but grab a syringe fill from super cheap or some where, they are not too dear. it will still take patience but is much cleaner, and accurate.
As for your make do ignition switch, it may pay to wire in a relay to handle the voltage, a wee toggle switch could give you problems, even over the short term with teh load.
