Re: 1973 Datsun 140j rebuild
My guess is the R31 conversion is going to be a very big job hence why i haven't looked into it to much yet. I'll prob have my car on the road before i really get stuck into that,
Would involve shorting housing and the axles chopping all the mounts off the 140J diff and welding them to the r31 diff.
Then a shorten drive shaft.
Thats the basics equals expensive.
Note Falcons are the most common to have LSD centers these can be fitted to Commy and R31 diffs.

Yip but still the same LSDs as the Commys and R31 Silhouettes just way way easier to find. As you say anything with any form of Ks on it will be pretty much buggered but a buggered LSD has still got to be a little better than an open diff.
Plus they are all a 28 spline BW common as anything diff so you can get aftermarket centers for them.

The earlier falcon/valiant LSD's are only 25 spline, and they are only two spider units.
Due to their age, and the amount of abuse most of them have seen they need tickling up a bit.
see link http://www.thirdgen.org/bw_9-bolt_cone_repair" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
My old man just gave the bw lsd in his ranger ute a birthday. and fitted new springs that he had custom made. Does great 11's now! As in two wheel skids, not 11 second e.t.'s. (Man, I wish!) lol

Re: 1973 Datsun 140j rebuild
get a 4 pinion one if you can, much better. They can be shimmed up really tight, but unsure how long they will last before they start slipping again. Probably quite a while in a nice light car like the datsun with comparatively small tyres
Mine was a shortened 4.1 VN housing but they are only 25 spline so had to track down the 28 spline axles and the Center with a modified IRS LSD Center to fit in. The mods were done by the diff shop. I didnt run it the end, I had to sell it cause I needed money
But it was definitely very tight, made it pretty bloody difficult to move the car around the garage vs the sloppy old datsun open diff

Yea like what they said.
Ive had no problem finding the 28 spline 4 pinion LSD falcon diffs seem to be in about 50% of the 1989-1993 shape 3.9 or 4L falcons.

Re: 1973 Datsun 140j rebuild
So after having my s110 of the road for two weeks getting the spedo re-built i finally got i back going on tuesday, then bang yesterday some lady backs her ranger into it!! then drove off, unknown to her i was sitting in the car and was right on to her. Luckily the ranger had full insurance so the car will be most likley of the road for another two weeks while the pannel beaters pull the front bumper back out (she had a tow bar!! and claimed she didn't even see me parked behind her). So after the pannel beaters had a good look at the car this mourning i went and saw how the 140j was going, and wow it was done!!!!!!! looks pretty awsome. Pics to follow

Not nice to have any car bent, but bet you were pleased it wasn't a freshly panel and painted 'J' that would really suck. Great to hear of the progress, looking forward to pics. Bring on Labour Weekend!

Re: 1973 Datsun 140j rebuild
As that was done i went and had a spend up on bearings and waterpump etc and was planning to drop block of for boring today, but with the excitment of the car back i couldn't be bothered driving to invers.
Also got the last of my front end bushes from cockrams today at a mean price and also a oil filter as i noticed the s110 had done 5k since we re-built the l18e so am going to treat it to a service
