well guys, after seeing these comments i sat down and worked it out......... actually only at $9000
that includes everything down to new badges, travel costs to drive it down to chch, a $200 allowance for alcohol while working on it (its actually much much higher ) paint stripping wheels and wire brushes, a replacement diff and starter motor etc.
i feel slightly better now

exactly, Thats what I figure. 9k is still a pretty good deal cause now you know exactly what you have a nice rust free (at least for a while anyway) 1200 coupe with a new paint job and some other goodies.
If you get too hung up on monbey your not going to like it when you spend another 10k it after you have it running getting a motor built a new exhaust etc etc etc.
They get out of hand quick.
I think im around the 10k mark. But if I counted the consumables like cut off discs welding gas, wire bottle rental, steel everything else involved in building it and the stuff i built that I decided I didnt want on there anymore and scrapped or sold it could easily be 15k I reckon

These figures are depressing, I'm not even going there, although I think the 1600 will be calculated and recorded much closely than the 1200 and Z, but to be Honest, I'd be surprised if the Blue Z owes me much more than that, it certainly didn't cost much more to purchase. The figures you are speaking would buy a Z, so it really does cause me to question the values we put on cars. I know my 1200 would be under $4000, maybe even $3000 to get to where it is, that's not to the level some of you have got to, but it is really enjoyable and preserved for use. I think if I had spent house deposits I'd be too scared to use them, my problem is too many toys, not enough time to use them all, but the day will come. (Hopefully when it does I'll have a KPGC10 to enjoy, pipe dream)

yeah but too put that into perspective vaughn, if ive spent 10k on my car over 5-6 years, we are looking at about $30 a week, most young fellas spend more than that on piss a week.
Sure i'll loose money when the time comes too sell but thats not what its about, I couldnt so much as weld when I started my car, look at it now. I havent raced it yet but im sure when I do ill enjoy it even more and wont be thinking about the cost. How do you put a price on the things youve learnt or the enjoyment you get out of it?

We are all sick datsun-a-holics after all!
We take pride in our Datsuns regardless of expenditure, and enjoy
like minded people, hence why this is such a great wee club IMO.
We all have different ideas too, and different styled cars which is cool.
As DJZ what else you going to waste money on , its a hobby afterall.
And as Nick says, when you work out expenditure over the build period its not so bigger hit.
We all spend what we can afford too, although according to my wife 100% of my expenditure we cant afford
I could race Moto-X, or hit the lakes in a jet boat or ski, or a 4WD truck or whatever and spend similiar money, but thats not my gig.
