A quick tip or advice please

Post by unlimitedpower »

Well ive just installed the pedal box and was fitting the steering column and i can't seem to get it to slide over the spline of the steering box.
Ive applied heaps of grease and have manage to get it to slide on a few mm just enough so i can get the two top bolts in that hold it to the pedal box.

How have others done it?
My next idea was to work out to to remove the steering wheel (not sure how to do that yet) and bash on the shaft (protecting the thread) and also tap the other end where it goes on the spline and see what happens,

Maybe this in in the wrong section im not sure, Its just annoying me i want to move forwards.

Does it have a master spline? (eg one spline larger than the rest) or are they all the same?

if you decide to take the steering wheel off, to remove the centre piece you push in and turn it, not just pull them off like all the other datsuns i've worked on, spent ages trying to get mine off

Can you spread the split in the outer spline sleeve with a flat screwdriver to try make it slip on easier?

Ive tried that. Seems like its made out of the most solid steel in existence. But i will do that again when i try next everything has to help i figure.
I'll get a mate to come round and give me a hand its quite hard doing this by my self trying to be at each end of the column at the same time.
